TitanTim wrote: Sat Jul 07, 2018 8:44 pm I did look at Garmins own HUD and at the time an American branded HUD which was around 500 quid so more expensive but I found what aftermarket HUDs were available tended to plug into the OBD socket which wasn't an option for me as I have a P3 vent guage. The American one I looked at there were alot of complaints from customers not receiving orders so I kept away. Subsequently found out they went bust.

I think it was you who responded last year when I asked about the retrofit HUD which I subsequently fitted to my 330d. Like you I am satisfied with it. Having just bought a 2010 E89 3.5 is I was looking for something similar. Do you think the BMW one will work in the E 89 without any problems?
I think you might have to check with the dealer, I can only find the following models listed that its compatible with;

Available for: BMW 3 Series Touring (from 2012), BMW X5 (from 2009), BMW X6 (from 2008), BMW 1 Series 3-door Sports Hatch (from 2007), BMW 1 Series Coupé (from 2011), BMW X1 (2009 - 2015), BMW 1 Series 5-door Sports Hatch (from 2007), BMW 1 Series Convertible (from 2009), BMW 3 Series Saloon (from 2008), BMW 3 Series Touring (from 2008), BMW 3 Series Coupé (from 2007), BMW 3 Series Convertible (2010 - 2013), BMW 5 Series Saloon (from 2010), BMW 5 Series Touring (from 2010), BMW 1 Series 5-door Sports Hatch (from 2011), BMW 1 Series 3-door Sports Hatch (from 2012), BMW X3 (from 2010), BMW 3 Series Saloon (from 2011), BMW X6 M, BMW 1 Series M Coupé, BMW X5 M, BMW M3 Saloon, BMW M3 Convertible, BMW M3 Coupé, BMW M5 Saloon, BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo (from 2013), BMW X5 (from 2013), BMW 4 Series Coupé (from 2013), BMW 4 Series Convertible (from 2013), BMW 2 Series Coupé (from 2013), BMW M3 Saloon (from 2014), BMW M4 Coupé (from 2014), BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé (from 2014), BMW X4 (from 2014), BMW M4 Convertible (from 2014), BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (from 2014), BMW X6 (from 2014), BMW 2 Series Convertible (from 2014), BMW X5 M (from 2014), BMW X6 M (from 2014), BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer (from 2015), BMW X1 (from 2015), BMW M2 Coupé (from 2015)

Thank you for taking the trouble to look. I’ll have a word with the guy at Soper’s in Lincoln. He is usually very helpful.

The E89 software is from the Ark - I’ve learned to accept it like it is.

My late 2016 car has no changes from my previous 2010 car. (Unless I’ve missed something)
You don't stop playing when you get old - You get old when you stop playing!
So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

It was just a thought. I am pleased with the aftermarket HUD on the 330d and it would have been useful to have something similar on the Z4. But I think I’ll just about manage to cope without one.

I swap between the 335 with a factory fit hud and the Z without. I feel that if I had an after market fit in the Z it would feel a bit sub standard.

I don’t intend this to imply that the after market unit is in any way junk, I just think that the difference between a factory fit and an add would be very apparent when constantly swapping between the two cars.

You are correct in your assumption. We tried out a 335d with HUD when we bought the 330d. The factory fit is by far the best but the aftermarket one isn’t too bad. The car we bought had all the other options we wanted so we compromised over the HUD. When we change the 330d we will certainly be looking for a factory fit HUD on the new car. But that won’t be for a while yet. Not if I want to avoid a divorce!

“Not if I want to avoid a divorce!”

I know how it works!

Ps. The trick is when it comes to the time to change, make the suggestion then leave it until the idea matures in her mind - then she makes the suggestion to change.

Managed that the last time. We had 3 cars and only the 2 of us at home. ‘She Who Must Be Obeyed’ suggested part-exchanging 2 for a new BMW, less tax, insurance, general upkeep. Worked a treat. So now we have the 330d and the recently acquired E89. No complaints at the moment.

I know this is in the US but there's an article in Mashable today about some HUD devices ...

https://mashable.com/2018/07/16/huds-na ... play-deal/

The lite version looks quite neat to get speed/revs up in front of you!

Looks interesting and worthy of further investigation. Price for the Lite is very reasonable.

There are lots for sale on Amazon and EBay but looking at reviews the projection type all seem to have problems with ghosting. Some claim not to but the reviews contradict this. I’ll keep looking i’m Sure I ‘ll find something in the end.
