Hard drive for music? Question.
Just discovered tonight (three days into ownership) that the car has a very large hard drive for music. And also that the previous owner was obsessed with Nora Jones!
Anyone know if this was an option? Was it part of a pack related to the sat nav? Must have been an unusual option in 2010 I would think.

Hard drive for music? Question.
Yeah, I think the drive is 20GB and 12GB is available for music. It is possible to upgrade it, but I think (from what I've read previously) its quite involved, not just a case of cloning the existing one...and apparently the car still only says 12GB (it lets you use more, but shows 12 until you drop below).
I've got a tiny 64GB memory "thumb" drive in the armrest, easier to manage in my opinion.

It's where the maps are stored, so surely is standard if you have iDrive.

Hard drive for music? Question.
I upgraded mine to a 128GB SSD drive. Quite an easy DIY, the hardest bit was removing the trim around the centre console.
My car didn't have the USB music option so it was a must-have modification. Bluetooth audio is always terrible quality so that was out of the equation.
The added bonus of the upgrade was that the SSD is faster so music and maps load a little quicker.

It was actually a 128GB drive I fitted.
Probably a difficult process for someone to figure out but once it was done once, they just did an image of their partitions and it's a easy DIY for everyone else to follow.

Hard drive for music? Question.
This is on my list of to-do's, but mainly to speed up the Nav boot time.R.E92 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 9:21 pm I upgraded mine to a 128GB SSD drive. Quite an easy DIY, the hardest bit was removing the trim around the centre console.

I very rarely use the music function. I have Google music on my phone and bluetooth it to the car. I find it too much of a hassle to download the songs, copy to USB copy to car etc.
Interesting you say bluetooth audio quality is terrible? Possibly in a perfect environment you might be able to tell a difference, but in a car I dont think so. Road noise from the run flats, creaks from the roof/interior deteriorate the sound quality far more than streaming over bluetooth.
In fact I rarely use the Nav either. I find it seldom picks the fastest route, and re-routing if you stray from the chosen route is terrible.
I did a Google maps Vs I-Drive (2018-1 maps) test recently.
Luton to Nottingham
I-Drive 130 minutes
Google 110 minutes
They picked completely different routes. Google easily won based on its ability to predict traffic. Even 40 minutes into the journey I-Drive was trying to re-route me back to it's initially proposed route and hadn't properly recalculated the best route.
