Collected today my S Drive 3.0 M Sport Manual

Pictures to follow I have been driving ! in fact I have done 220 miles today . Motorway to get home and then lots of hooning and still 34mpg right now . So it says .

Its a great car with a lovely engine . I have read on here that some say its a bit skittish on fast smaller roads, yes it is a bit nothing compared to the TVR I was driving last month , you have no idea how good the Z4 is in comparison. Its on run flats right now and wont be after Thursday when I am going to regular tires .

So my questions please :

What on earth is living in the center dash behind the radio that is creaking, rattling . It must be killed whatever it is . I did a search and found it was mentioned but not in enough detail for me to deal with.

The car is fully BMW warranted and just serviced , I think there is a slight chain noise .( 34k miles) When you tun it off it sounds like it runs over, that sounds like a chain to me coming to a stop . Is this common ?

When I am on regular tires , what do others put in the boot. We are off three days in France this weekend. No Jack, no spare , what do people take as a get out of trouble in the cavernous boot ? Do people carry the dreaded cans of goop ?

Finally the steering in normal is a little dead and better , much better in Sport. Is there a way of having the sport steering setting in normal?

Thank you all in advance

David

Lovely looking Z4 OP.

I'm not sure about some of your questions, but I've got 2 cans of Holts Tyreweld and a compressor in case of a puncture (with RAC Membership as a back-up). :)

Oh, and 34mpg is quite possible - my 3.0Si is showing 33.6 mpg average at the moment!
Coupes because stunning!

Thats nice, really like that colour, I looked for a while for one that wasn't silver but bit the bullet in the end and bought a silver one as it was the best out there at the time but prefer many of the other colours including yours ....

Welcome!

Can’t answer your questions, but where in the country are you...?

Bet that wasn’t a cheap E89!

Been considering changing my run flats out- so interested in the comments, I always have that ‘what if’ thought niggling.

Well i think you can forget it being the timing chain , almost unheard of to have a problem with that & especially so on 34k car .
The sound you describe is often more prominent in the S54 ZMs , they can sound terrible if ignition is turned off in neutral with clutch not depressed .
With N52s its pretty common to hear the DMF on tickover , simply depressing clutch makes it go away , from my own experience whilst it may be disconcerting it doesn't necessarily mean there is a mechanical fail on the horizon

The run flats have gone and 4 new Avon ZZ5's are on. 225 40 18 and 245 40 18 The difference is extraordinary .It was poring with rain as I left the Tyre shop and I did 20 miles of dual carriage way and noticed all the other noises in the car apart from the road noise. Its easily reduced noise by more then half. Then onto some twisties that I drove when I collected the car on Tuesday and described it as twitchy. Its not now its smooth as ever and no bump steer feeling at all. This was in the wet, the regular tires have absolutely transformed the car and steering . Its released the car from OK to very good, now still got to stop that dash rattle. As an aside all the rattles are far less with a bit of compliance in the tires.

In case of punctures I carry a "Slime Smart Repair Kit" which has the sealant and a compressor all contained within a nice zipped bag. The compressor also comes in handy for keeping the air in your tyres topped up.

And there's even better to come as the tyres 'settle in'.
