Just got my E89 2014 home.

Seems basic, but...

A little paranoid as to roof clearance when reversed close to a wall or in a garage, and wanting to bring the top down- should I be?

Hi matey, I don’t know the exact clearance height (it’s not that high) but you will be ok in a garage or multi storey car park. You can always pause the procedure and measure it!!!!!

Also it doesn’t extend any further back than the rear of the car

when you are outside, lower it on the key and pause it, get an idea of the measurements and check in the garage

If in any doubt, operate the roof when you’re not in the garage

I've just bought an E85 Z4. With it parked in the garage last night I brought the roof up while I was standing outside the car so I could judge the overhead clearance. On the E85 you insert the key into the door lock and turn it to lock the car. Keeping the key turned to the "lock" position will raise the hood. Turning and keeping the key in the "unlock" position will lower the hood. The windows automatically raise/lower as usual. If at any time you want the roof to stop moving, you bring the key back to the "neutral" position

Edited to remove confusion because the above procedure is for the E85, not the E89.

E85 Yes, but not E89 I think
Although I did find the emergency key in the fob! Only had the car 2 years
Tried it - all it did was set the alarm off :(
Reset and tried again - doesn't work for me

My bad. Wandered into the modern world of the E89 forums by accident! I'll get my coat...

BE CAREFUL IF YOU BACK UP CLOSE TO A WALL.
When the boot opens on the rear hinges to accept the roof the top lip of the boot lid extends beyond its normal amount to the rear. If your very close to a wall or projection it may catch. Also take care in multi storeys, some have low light fittings, speakers, signs etc that might catch the roof.
