Removing that exhaust backbox, Need more info!

Post by Action Jackson » Thu May 10, 2018 12:56 am

Hey all!

(First post here so be kind!)

Got my Z4 a few weeks back (Just in time for this BMW Recall! :o )

I really fancy getting rid of the backbox on the exhaust, I think my 3.0l deserves a lil' bit more of a punchy and playful sound!

I live down in the south east, yet cant find many places nearby. I managed to visit a (somewhat local) longlife garage however they quoted me £395 (Inc. VAT) to replace the backbox with stainless steel pipes, does this seem a little bit expensive to you guys? (Still deciding on some tips to go along with it!)

I know people on here have done multiple different things on there exhausts, but cant find much info on prices people have paid!!

any guidance and info would be much appreciated!

Holy s**t that's got to be a joke! 395! Mike did me that for 100 quid! Means a drive up north tho

Current: 2.5i Titan silver

£395 is way over the top. My modified backboxes are original oem and still £100 cheaper after 5 hours labour plus materials making them..

Just for info, this is what my own car sounds like with my modified box, and it DOESN'T drone at any speed..

Call Redhill Classics, say Steve with the white Z4 sent you. They did my centre silencer delete for less than £100.

Steve

Firstly apologies for the cross platform stalking ...

Did the middle silencer delete make a decent difference ? I did start an exhaust thread a few days ago but lots of views, no comments.

Do you know if all the E89s have a centre silencer ? Mines a 3.0 Si ...

Cheers ....

No worries!

Personally, I wouldn’t want it much louder. It’s quite loud on cold start and it makes plenty of crackle and pops on overrun! You really need the roof down to hear it though!

The rear silencer is huge and removing it will make your car loud, very loud! My cousin has done this on a 6 cylinder e46 and it’s far too loud for my liking.

As far as I’m aware all e89’s will have a centre silencer, I’d start with this first and if you want it louder you can always put the centre silencer back in and remove the rear box but it will drone!

Ok, sounds like a plan, will try the boys at Redhill, have friends that live there that I can camp out with whilst they do it ...

As has also been asked, what are the tips called ? did Redhill Classics supply them ??

I purchased them and they fitted them. Can’t find the link right now but they’re carbon fibre akrapovic tips.

If I remember correctly you need about a 60mm inlet and a max of an 80mm outlet. Mine are either 54mm inlet or 63mm (cannot remember!) but the outlets are definitely 76mm and look perfect in my opinion
