Exhaust Sounds Like Its Blowing On Start Up

Post by RustyZ4 » Sat May 05, 2018 3:43 pm

I have the 2.0 twin turbo (2.8), which when I start it up from cold, it always sounds like the exhaust is blowing, this only lasts for a very short while, probably 30 seconds, but being my first turbo car, I wondered if this is something to do with that or if it is normal?

Hi, it’s normal for the twin scroll turbo cars to sound like that-I think it’s emission based activity & soon sounds normal as you’ve noticed

I was wondering the exact same thing today on mine! I guess as the roof is down a lot at the moment I'm noticing it more. Good to know it's normal.

I was reading somewhere that it’s the flap in the exhaust opens on startup with the roof down making it sound nice and throaty

I thought that also, although it does it first thing in the morning when the engine is cold and roof up, I just put it down to the flap being initially open. Don't know for how long though.

There is a flap in the exhaust as mentioned, but it’s at the rear silencer end-the “blowing sound” the op noticed is by the turbo at the engine end I think? :?

Exhaust Sounds Like Its Blowing On Start Up

I get the same with mine.
I dont like the sound at all.. to me it doesn't sound sporty but just like a blowing exhaust.
It lasts for 20-30 secs, less if its a hot day and only from cold. Its almost like its running with the choke open!

I realised my exhaust flap was seized (and the PO had done the golf tee mod). I've reconnected it freed it up but it still doesn't seem to operate.

If I close the flap by hand and start the car it sounds much better. Might be worth investigating on yours too?

Same here. I also realized that there is a flap in my right exhaust that seems to be always open. I took a picture. My concern is if I could have any problems in vehicle inspections. I don't have problems with the sound.

Can you move the flap by hand?
I wouldn't think it will cause a problem with vehicle inspections.

I may try. Is it possible just pulling it with something that fits there? Would then be closed all the time? Maybe something is disconnected and the flap doesn't work.

There's an arm that comes out the side of the exhaust. You should be able to push it with your finger in the direction of the arrow.

Also check the vacuum hose is connected (marked in red on the photo).

i think a few owners disconnect the flap on the e89 for the sound. Try searching ‘golf tee mod’ and you’ll be able to identify if that was done by a previous owner.

I just saw now the video. I guess the flap is closed, then you press the lever and it opens and closes again. Is that true? Or is just the oposite?

Edit: I tried in mine and pulling that lever closes the flap and releasing closes it again
