I'd love to replace, or to use, the dashboard 'sunglasses' storage compartment on my 2010 E89 2.3i so as to accommodate an iPhone - securely mounted. It's an ideal location, especially for navigation. Mount needs to be flexible for different phone versions. Magnetic perfect. Any suggestions? Appreciate!

For info there are legalities regarding the placing of phones for use as GPS in cars in the UK. I believe the only acceptable position is lower right of the windscreen. Sure you can find more info if you google the hell out of it

Check this one out, I have a few, magnetic windscreen mount which is very strong, and holds a plus size iphone throughout ‘spirited driving’ also, very cheap.
It is not illegal to mount the phone on the windscreen anywhere it does not obscure your view, ie infront of the steering wheel, but you can mount it in the lower parts, mine is centre mounted.
Using your satnav on your phone is legal if you do not touch the phone whilst driving. So if you pre program your route before you set off and do not touch it unless pulled over safely wth the engine off or handbreak applied, then it is ok.
Unfortunatley, most phones have annoying popups that get in the way of the nav screen!!
Not sure about the law of messing with a dedicated satnav device whilst driving, but is probably similar.

I bought this one and stuck it to the underside of the lid for the storage area you are talking about. You simply stick a magnetic disc to the back of your phone and attach it to the holder. Works perfectly, holds my phone securely and is an ideal spot for using your phone as a satnav.

Yeah forget the window ones they fall off. Best one I've had is the Aukey magnetic disc that goes on your air vent. Perfect fit for a phone, looks like a sat nav screen. About six quid from eBay with magnetic pads that go on or in phone case. Job done

Do you have any pics of where you've mounted that? Do you think it would work through a case?miloz4 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 18, 2018 10:23 pm I have these on my E89, Range Rover and the wifes Mini Countryman, they work fantastically, hold iphone 8 Plus still, manovourable and easy to transfer phone from car to car.

I actually got a cheap (£5) vent mount one from TK Maxx for my E89. THe ones that clasp the phone. It's perfect for my occasional use, normally lives in the compartment above, and is close to the 12v socket to charge too
Fits the Galaxy S8 in it's case no problem.
Did I mention cheap?

I can get some pics later, I fitted it between the heated dials on the dash so it sits above cd slot and nav screen. It is very powerful, I am sure it would fit through a thin to medium thickness case, but you coudl always put the magnet on the back of the case.ihadablackdog wrote: ↑Thu Apr 19, 2018 10:22 amDo you have any pics of where you've mounted that? I have mine under a skin from Easyskinz and there is no sign of any loss of grab.

I'd tried to balance my phone in the compartment but gave up as it was obscuring my view quite a lot so, if it's any help I have the following set up that I'm now happy with:
Brodit ProClip Mount - see https://www.brodit.com/product.html?id= ... &year=2010
Wuteku Dash Flat Cell Phone Mount Holder - see https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B075FS5B25/
It looks like this when installed: You lose the vent but I've not really noticed it and the height of the phone makes a good display for the live output of my OBDII port adaptor
