FYI

To uprate your brake fluid to a racing fluid costs £40 at BMS Surrey.

Well worth it if you plan on doing any track driving.

Fireball wrote: Tue Apr 03, 2018 7:52 pm Just had brake fluid changed by BMW dealer in South Dorset for £52 inc VAT on my 2010 23i. That is cheaper than changing it on my BMW K1300GT motorcycle, the BMW bike dealer charges around £80 for that privilege and on the bike they recommend it is done every 2 years regardless of mileage.
Brake fluid changes on a bike has to be one of the easiest things you can do yourself.
A bottle of brake fluid, an old jam jar, a bit of tubing and a spanner.
Next time save yourself £70 and do it yourself.
Some bikes are a nightmare, my 2006 r1200gs with servo assisted brakes was awful & the fluid had to be added to the abs block and not the reservoir :(

Just had a quote from a very reputable Porsche specialist who after researching oil and parts needed said £330 plus VAT for the same service. One more recommendation to try in Newcastle who does work for the local Ferrari club. They all say he is reasonable but what is reasonable when your looking at a service for a Ferrari. Worth a try though.

How can you be sure the work has been done? Such things as "coolant flush" could just be glossed over and not performed, I mean, how could you tell?

This is the exact dilemma I am in now! The supplying dealer says they changed the oil....but didn't stamp the book. So if I leave it till its next due in 2 years time, that could be 4 years with no oil change. Considering the con job they did with the brakes, I doubt they did the oil, which is why I want a full service, to be sure it has all been done.

You are completely right, how will I know my local dealer has done the work? I guess, I won't, but I trust them more than the selling dealer (well, as far as you can trust a main dealer) :)

Its the same with any garage though, so I am stuck because I won't attempt it myself (people might say its easy, but I'm not even going there).

1. Go to a reputable garage that you trust.
2. Do it yourself.

Its the same with any work really. Go to someone you can trust or watch doing it perhaps.

My local Aston Martin dealership has a glass wall between the coffee shop and the garage so you can watch the car being serviced. They also video the work being done and send you it or give you a link to dial into live. As you would expect though it all costs. Very impressive though

So the selling dealer have paid my local dealer to do the brakes that they screwed up, so I've booked it in for next Thursday for the breaks, the full service and a couple other things.

Asked about changing the coolant...they said it is meant to last the life of the car...was that true in 2011? However, to change it would be £130! Said no to that!

If you are based in London & SE, go to Munich Legends for the coolant flush, it’s roughly £30.

I'm in North Devon. There is a specialist BMW indy about 50 miles away, so might be worth asking them. Going to get BMW to do the other things, but for a one off it might be worth it.

How long does it take to do?
