Started the car to defrost while I went back in for breakfast then returned to car afterwards thinking I had the fob in my pocket, saw remote missing warning on the display which usually pops up in this scenario then it disappeared and I drove off to work. I arrive to work 15 miles away and touch the door handle to lock it, doesn’t lock, check my pockets, no fob! Can’t believe the car let me drive without the fob
Was rescued by a family member sending a taxi with my fob

One of the reasons keyless car thefts are so easy - if you can get it started with a repeater etc, you can just drive away :x

Think there was a Top Gear out take were James May had dropped the fob down the side of the seat and couldn't retrieve it.
Didn't want to leave car as anybody could drive it off. It was a Lambo or similar.

Not the same but slightly related... Walking round the house with keys in pocket Sunday... Look out window after a few hours to admire car as you do from time to time, notice id lowered the roof

It could have chucked it down during that time..

Interestingly from new my CA fobs need to be within 50cm of the handle you're using to unlock the car/boot. Also if the key is in the boot the car won't start but you can open the boot just fine, also to start the car you need the key in the cabin.

So far I've seen several people pull this very stunt with remote central locking & keyless ignition. Worst case I've known is someone dropping the key on the floor as they got into the car. The key being in range for starting and so drive off. They ran over & destroyed the key, with the spare on the other side of Europe!

Possibly, but for the most part it is a useful option. The lesson here if leaving the car running like this is to lock the car while it’s unattended so I’m forced to have the fob on me before getting in and driving away.

That's what I do. Two reasons.
It can't be nicked without breaking in
I can't go without the key.

I always de-spec it from the cars I order, far too risky.

I would suspect the insurance would be void if it was nicked whilst left running outside?

Done that on my 535D many a time. Rear windows down and the worst example was tailgate was open one morning.
I once also stopped for a Costa Coffee meeting with a colleague, came back to car an hour later and engine was still running. Sounds laughable but when you are rushing round it's easy to do.

Would probably be best not to tell them that part if it was stolen...
