E89 Ski Hatch

Post by LeePreston » Wed Jan 10, 2018 11:18 pm

Has anyone retro fitted the ‘ski hatch’ to their E89?

It appears that mine hasn’t got one, but a previous owner has cut a hole in the same area and the covered it with carpet and double-sided tape.

Im thinking of trying to retrofit the ski hatch, but wondered if it’s a big job or not?

Also..... don’t suppose anyone has one they want to sell?

Thanks in advance. 😛

There’s a hole. Well, it’s got some form of plastic infill. In the panel behind the seats.

I never noticed it when I bought the car because the car side has a matching carpet front covering the area.

it can be put in anytime..... I saw my car in the showroom and it had a ski bag/hatch installed. When i picked it up a couple of days later the hatch was gone, replaced with a cupboard of some kind. I blew up, told them to stuff the car and the deal if the hatch wasn't there. (some salesman wanted it and swapped it out, thinking it wasn't an issue). They ordered one in and popped it in right away. If a flunky at BMW can put one in , anyone can.

I retro fitted the ski hatch/cupboard. The back trim comes complete with the through hole, has a door in the cabin with shelves and detachable panel in the boot. A bit of a game getting the old trim out. Not seen a ski bag though, probably just pushes in place of the shelving. Got my parts from a local BMW breaker, cabin bulkhead trim and boot bulkhead trim. The boot bulkhead is not as deep as the standard in that area.

Mine came with a Ski hatch but as I have no intention of (1) driving to a ski slope and (2) actually putting ski's on .I removed it kept it for a couple of years then threw it away . Sorry never thought anyone would want it.

The storage unit that goes in the hole is far more useful.

Try putting a rifle in the boot or a driver ( golf club) , much easier with ski bag.

I think it might have been with the cold weather package. Mine has the opening, the ski bag, and a device that acts similar to a ski rack that holds the skis in place. It mounts across the back near the trunk (boot) lid. As an avid snow skier over the years, I always used my daily driver roadsters in the winter and left the ski rack on all winter but it did damage the paint. Also the high carbon ski steel edges on the skis rusted badly and the expensive safety bindings needed to be covered to avoid the corrosion from the road salt that sprayed over them out on the highway. So keeping the skis inside the car is a very good idea. An external rack is also not secure and of course would not allow the top to be lowered. Sunny winter days with the heated seats and wheel can be great top down in ski country. The shelving insert is also a nice touch if you want to keep small items within reach although I like to just leave the port open so I can access some items that end up in there when there is luggage in the back. And BTW with comfort access you can more easily access luggage when the top is down by raising the shelf and the top slightly with the key fob.
Obviously these are not roomy cars but there was an effort to use every possible cavity for storage. I really admire the effort made by the designers to make this car as versatile as possible for a 2 seat sports car. The hard top, of course is the ultimate all weather feature.

Was it not an option under "extended storage" in the latter models?
UNDERSTEER is when you hit the fence with the front of the car,
OVERSTEER is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car,
HORSEPOWER is how fast you hit the fence,
TORQUE is how far you take the fence with you.
