Now this really does open up a can of worms Everyone will have a different viewpoint and price can also be an issue. All I can say is what I fitted and which I am more than happy. For the front I went with ceramic made by ATE as they are reported to give of less dust, for me this worked and also provided good braking, for the rear I went for Pagid which work fine. both supplied by euro car parts,as were the discs I also replaced. Don't forget you will need to replace the pad wear sensor's front and rear as they don't like being disturbed and in my experience do not change from old to new. As previously mentioned changing brake hoses from the standard ones to braided stainless steel does improve braking giving a sharper braking effect and more consistent braking ,

For race cars expensive drilled discs do service a purpose, it's actually to let the gas escape.
But cheap drilled discs are a waste of time in my opinion
I was just thinking about how they use different style discs for different weathers and where solid discs are used when they need to keep heat in the discs.

Yes good point it's probably different on a bike, you wouldn't want carbon discs in the wet on a bike but does it matter in a car ?

I bought mtec for my 23i. I barely notice them through my alloy wheels and found them noisier than the standard at first using green stuff pads.
Worth while paying extra for the plated ones.

Bike discs are often two piece as well which adds to the price astronomically.

Just google the question. There are many race teams, brake specialists etc who give advice on youtube etc.
Generally its slotted only as drilled are purely aesthetic.
Most say that slotted are the only option as drilled give uneven wear, crack etc.
Drilled discs on race cars are not seen.
Don't forget, the more grooves, dimples or holes the more friction surface you lose, six grooves max.

Yes indeed and they are "floating discs" which also adds to the cost

So are the drilled carbon and ceramic discs you see on high end sports cars for aesthetics rather than function ?

I can see how grooves might act to reduce scratching, wear, gases, but what happens when they are full of crud.
Keep in mind racing they probably replace every race.
Would have thought drilled better.
But does drilling effect the cooling of the disc regards flow from the centre to the outside rim?

you'd think there must be some additional cooling effect, but its a trade off against loosing surface area
