An errant piece of lumber was bouncing down the road and smacked the drivers mirror.
Left a nice hole in it.
The mirror still works fine . Can the outside skin be replaced easily

Yes they just clip on. Can be prised off or taken off nicely having removed the glass first.

You do not need to remove the glass to remove the cover, just use a flat bladed object made of wood/plastic. Place it in the small groove that runs around the mirror and prise it open gently, very easy to do. You can get some nice carbon fibre ones on Ebay....

GLASS Is very easy to remove and has the benefit of access to internal clips reducing possible damage.
