Exhaust noise with the top up

Post by Lazza » Thu Dec 28, 2017 6:48 pm

My 35i sounds lovely with the top down with all sorts of pops, cracking & burbling noises. With the top up it is impressively quiet. And that’s what my question is regarding. Is there a way to get more exhaust noise into the cabin?
I know some cars have sound tubes (whatever the proper name is) to bring exhaust noise into the cabin. Is there anything like this for mine?
It sounds great top down so I’m not looking to make the exhaust itself louder (well not yet anyway. Maybe in summer).

I played with a cheap radio mic. off ebay for several pounds. Small transmitter with mic and receiver with 3.5 pin plug.
Plug into the car AUX in and place mic near exhaust. Then you can play through the car radio the exhaust noise.
Bit of novelty value, but picks up tyre noise and can hear the birds singing and conversations of people in the street.

OP, have you tried ... er ... opening the back window a bit? :)

Works for me.

Well yes but if the top is up, that generally means it’s raining :driving:

The earlier cars with the sound tubes brought the engine induction noise into the cabin not exhaust noise, like Busterboo said on the rare occasion I drive with the roof up I open the back windows.

Simple length of hosepipe from the exhaust into the cabin should do the trick.

It would certainly go a lot quieter.

Exhaust noise with the top up

Oddly I was noticing this today. The cabin is remarkably quiet. Started the car up to warm it up and de-ice the windows and the rasp from the exhaust was great to hear. Can never usually hear it in the car, even with the roof down.
