A scary (but fortunate) end to Z4 Ownership
Edit - Insurance claim resolved, here: viewtopic.php?p=1526332#p1526332
Hi all,
Yesterday morning I had the unhappy privilege of rounding a blind bend and finding myself on a stretch of road covered in snow and ice. I wasn't going fast, as it was wet and 0.5 degrees out, but the rest of my journey did not contain such dangerous conditions so I just wasn't expecting it.
Couldn't slow the car in time, got onto the snow and ice, fishtailed, couldn't hold it, went off the road and into a farmer's field a four foot drop away. Car went nose first in, bounced onto passenger side, and then landed on the roof.
Amazingly I was cut free by the fire brigade and able to walk away from my car. My injuries are no more serious than a few cuts and bruises, and a bit of whiplash.
I am a lucky boy and probably owe my life to whoever at BMW was responsible for engineering that roof and the other safety systems.
Stay safe out there guys. I'm well aware I got away with this one - lucky I'm able to post this at all.

Hi there,
I’m sorry to hear about the accident but really glad to hear you are unharmed!
Thanks for sharing and reminding us to stay safe: the roads can be really treacherous at this time of the year.
All the best,
A

Lucky escape. Shame about the car though.
Was there a reason that you had to be cut out of the car?
The car looks fine on the drivers side, would the door not open?

Glad you lived to tell the tale DK
Lots of luck there, roof up, nice soft wet mud field and not too fast.
Tell me did the airbags pop?

Probably just me wording that wrong. The car itself didn't need cutting; the driver's door did indeed open fine. It was the belt that needed cutting - it tightened that much that pressing the release button wouldn't disengage it.
Yup, air bags definitely went. Still feel a ringing in my right ear when it's quiet... But yes, think the nice soft mud did me a favour. Wouldn't have liked to be in the same rolling situation on a warm summer's day with the roof down (although I believe the roll hoops behind the seats are weight bearing anyways).
Thanks for all the nice comments guys. Very glad to be walking around today.
--Edit
Annoyingly I've only just had for new F1AS3s put on... Not even done 1000 miles yet. Pretty sure one of the wheels is buckled, but it's the insurance company's now!

Lucky escape as you say. Don't think that will buff out either. Tracking looks way off
Regarding the hoops, yes they are load bearing, but also will dig into soft ground. Had you had your roof down, it could have sunk to the door depending how soft the field was.

I would not fancy trying it, being 6'4" i really would not want to roll mine with the roof up or down
