Any car can last 1,000,000 miles. Just replace what it needs and keep truckin, seriously. I have a '69 Mercedes that's as good as it was in 1979. Repairing, especially if done 'DYI', is also always cheaper than buying new every 5 or so years, as in tens of thousands cheaper, in the long run. So if he really likes this car, then he can commit to it and enjoy a great many years with it.

Taken all comments on board and the lad had a look at some diesels and then we looked at the pennies (more like £s) and for a diesel that he felt he could live with for a couple of years there was not a lot of saving over running the Z4. He drove to work this morning doing a very similar journey to the one he will be doing and although twice the distance of his usual commute, it didn't take much longer. All down to less traffic congestion and therefore a lot less stop/start driving which should be better for the car.
Looks as if the Z4 will be staying.
Thanks for all the comments - they really helped.

One thing i can say for my 10 year old 82k Zed, it's just passed it's 7th mot under my ownership and has never failed a mot.
That's a first for all the cars i have owned.
Most other cars i have owned i would be replacing the exhaust, ball joints and gaiters by now.
And adjusting the hand brake for the millionth time.

My '69 Merc has not failed an MOT yet. Just maintain as needed. Same for our two Volvos (150K plus miles) and our 95K miles Z4.

There is a lot more electronics and sensitive, complex and potentially temperamental stuff in a Zed than a '69 Merc Clees... When it goes wrong, it goes expensively wrong.... I take your general point though.

Im a 100 mile a day commuter, using the 23i daily. All i can say is that its smiles per gallon. I went from 45k and now up to almost 90k in 1 1/2 years. I can honestly say no major issues just the normal wear and tear, change to non runflats and keep a tyre inflator and stuff in the car and your good. The only downside is fuel, but that depends i average out 30 mpg which is perfect for me. Yes the resale value of my vehicle has dropped but every 7,000 miles il book in a service and do an oil change, wash my car every week and just look after it. Be safe and drive safe dont be afraid to put miles on the car my car feels exactly the same as i bought it if not better

What about Winter driving? Rear wheel drive isn’t so good in snow and ice. It would certainly be worth thinking about a set of Winter wheels and tyres if your son is going to keep the Z4.

So ive done harsh snows, in the zed without winter tyres, and honestly id never do it again. When i first purchased the zed never had rear wheel drive experience before and literally a few weeks in we had one of the harshest winters, and i didnt know any better. Id still do the 100 mile commute and i only got stuck once. I would recommend two sets of tyres but at the same time i would also recommend some great tyres that will give you the grip and everything you need. Dont be afraid to go down to 17inch alloys and good quality winter tyres theyre cheap and often from the foum you can pick up the whole thing relatively cheap. Should be okay enjoy it

If the car has to be used all year round some winter tyres are definitely worth having.

Soon after I got my E46 I bought a set of wheels with winter tyres on here for £180. Used them 3 winters and sold them on here for £125 so they only cost me £55 - I doubt I could have bought 1 winter tyre for that!

Luckily my current 3 Series came on summers with a full set of winters - very handy in the snow earlier this year. :D
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue

I just don't bother going out in the snow, there are too many muppets about trying to be the next rally champion. But then that's the luxury of being able to work from home :)

Thought id drop in to this comment section as an update. Covid has meant not too much driving working from home now now but from 2019 hitting almost 90k miles to 2021 just having touched 100k miles.

She just goes ❤️!

Makes my 1000 Miles/year over the last two mot years look a bit silly
You don't stop playing when you get old - You get old when you stop playing!
So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

A few quick sums

25,000 miles in a diesel at 60mpg £2500
25,000 miles in Z4 at 35 mpg £4200

The difference in price buys a cheap diesel. Save the Zed for weekend fun. If the deisel lasts more than a year you're
quids in.

A diesel for £1700? you wouldn't get much fun from a car like that. I would say keep on using the 23i it will be way more fun and the drivetrain in that car is rock solid built to take huge miles.

A slightly decent diesel for £1700 in this market will be quite hard to find at present.
