Ex company car driver - 1st insurance!

Post by Austin » Sun Dec 28, 2014 4:01 pm

Hi all

I am Coming out of a company car in January after 18yrs and need to get my own insurance for the first time. I am looking at either a Z4C 3.0si or Z4MC, choice of which may be influenced by the nice insurers!

Can anyone recommend a company who takes into account the fact I have been driving for 20yrs?

38yrs old
No claims ever
Only ever had 3pts and that was 20 yrs ago
Would be looking for around 10k miles a yr

Thanks in advance for any tips
Austin

I'd have thought that they all will be OK with that. It's a good record, so providing you can substantiate it I'd start with the forum broker and take it from there.

Classic line do not use NCD, so definitely worth a shout.

Also worth trying to get a letter from your companies insurance company regarding driving history.

+1 on this

Cindy's just changed jobs and doesn't get a company lease car for the first time in 9 years, but we asked the fleet manager to provide documentation of her driving history and they obtained letters from the different fleet insurers that they'd used over the years confirming that she'd never had any claims - she got her new insurance through Admiral and they were quite happy to accept the letters as proof of no-claims entitlement

Bought my z4m coupe at 23 and it cost me £900 with 2ync and 3 points by the time I hit 26 cost me just over £550... I don't think you need to worry.

In terms of the cars Z4Mc all day long the SI is a great car but as soon as you drive the M the SI doesn't seem half as special.

I had a similar experience about 18 months ago.
Wanting to change my sunny weekend bike to a sunny weekend car.

CC driver nearly 30 years, max NC motorcycles over 20 years.

You can't transfer motorcycle Ncd onto cars and you don't have Ncd from your CC.

I went with a broker ( after doing on line comparison ) Grove and Dean.
They gave me the equivalent of 5 years NC discount with written proof from my company that I had full private and company use of my CC daily driver and no accidents or claims in that time.

You still start with 0 years NC and I will soon have built up 2 years (fingers crossed) but you get the 5 years NC discount.

They were very fair and very competitive and their policy includes breakdown cover.
Highly Reccomended give them a try

We just had the same scenario.

We looked through confused.com and went with Admiral.
2005 Z4 3.0 Black, Zhp gear knob.

If you have experience of similar performance vehicles we can take the company car proof and give you a good rate. Please include us in the mix.

I went to Aviva, and they mirrored my claim history - nothing for 5 years with a discount equivalent to 5 yrs NCD and said after two years I would be entitled to actual 5 years NCD on my renewal. Of course as soon as the 2 years were up, and 5 years NCD were entered in to the websites, more companies were competitive and I just searched the market and got better deals.

I will give your guys a call on Tuesday, as I also had 3 years with Backford Bloor for an AK Cobra (6.7l V8) but as this was kit car insurance it didn't attract any no claims, so have experience of performance vehicles.

Thanks to everyone else for the feedback - starting to get some acceptable quotes now - amazing how they can vary by so much!
