Insurance quotes, my recent experience

Post by Mr Whippy » Thu Dec 22, 2011 12:00 pm

I've been ringing around again recently.

My best quote has been with Admiral, very low excess, similar cover to all the other insurers with regard to legal cover, courtesy cars and all that stuff, and the lowest total premium. That is with some mods declared, like RFT tyres, de-cats, m-sport retrofit seats etc.

Second best in my view were Aviva, they had near double excess to Admiral, and a higher total charge. However, once again, no issues with the mods I have made at all.

I hate to say this, but the most frustrating to deal with were actually Chris Knott. They limit you based on age and experience with the car, and have some stupid caveats about personal injury/possessions due to the soft-top. They also had a really high excess. They only just beat Aviva because they knew what they had quoted me (I told them, maybe a bad idea?)

Being part of the club, having 3yrs experience with the car, and being over 30yrs old, apparently all the things worth waiting for to be able to get one of their fantastic quotes, gives me a whopping £25 off Aviva! Still £300 more excess than Admiral, and £200 more for the actual quote!

They also pretended they were special when talking about accepting exhaust mods, while Admiral and Aviva checked and said they were fine, they didn't even really care or make adjustments after I'd mentioned them.

I just wonder why we have Chris Knott as the forum advertised insurers? Are they any better for M cars or something?

Or are they just pushing their luck on the price they are giving me knowing I haven't found cheaper yet?

In any case they have really put me off with their approach to offering insurance to me!

Cheers

Err....nope - not insuring M's is one of a long list of their exclusions I'm afraid.

It costs money to run a forum and therefore I am guessing that they were the only company to offer funding in order to become the official insurer.

First time in 20 years I changed from Churchill as their renewal was just plain stupid and mods of any type are not allowed, full stop.

Changed to Admiral and added the 5 cars to the policy. Was significantly cheaper, hope they won't be playing silly games next year though.

They all seem to play silly games after a year.I was with Direct Line for seven years but last year they wanted almost £700 despite being 51 and having 8 years NCB.I changed to Swiftcover and paid £370.This year i tried Direct line again and got it for just over £400;why do they penalise loyalty?

Because they're greedy and not at all customer centric. They rely on people not bothering to do the stupid cancellation/negotiation each year. As you're legally obliged to have insurance, they feel empowered to take the piss. Then the government taxes you on the insurance policy they insist you have. *sigh*

With admiral multicar, details in the comparison thread. I've called chris knott a few times for my scirocco especially theyve never been the most competitive have come reasonably close once.

On the whole they are expensive, I guess thats why they feel the need to sponsor all the forums.

I noticed that, they sponsor a fair few forums... I wonder if they are actually competitive for anyone.

This year my wife and I have had the best experience with Aviva and Admiral. Good levels of cover and good comms, along with reasonable prices and excesses.

Two of us on here have ///M's insured with them for £370 which half the price of the next cheapest price I had also.

Admiral multicar policy for my 320d and Z4M (Westfield is on a separate specialist policy) - much cheaper than the alternative and no problems with several mods
After many years of loyalty, my father recently has changed from Churchill for his cars due to markedly inflated premiums.

Z4MC - heavily fettled for track use
Lotus Exige - sensible daily driver on the mods slippery slope
Westfield SEiW - in hibernation
Modified RS4 Avant - back in Blighty
S2000 GT - gone
