Z4 3.0i Conversion to race Car thread.

Post by Skinny 86 » Fri May 19, 2017 8:20 am

Hi all,

Started this on newbies but thought i should move it to here.

We are currently beginning the process of turning a road going Z4 3.0i Sport into a Race car for a new race championship for Z cars ( Z3 & Z4).

Thought it maybe something that people want to see and it may drum up interest for other people interested in going racing..

Plus we will have pretty much everything off the car to sell apart from the the main bits shell engine etc, so if you need bits please let me know].

We have only just started the build but car is now stripped and as i write this is having the Roll cage welded in.

We now have the car back and the work starts again.

Now in the process of removing the engine and gearbox. Will be replacing the clutch and moving over to a solid flywheel rather than a dual mass.

car will be going off to have the engine bay painted and also the interior and cage.

Yes that is the one.

It has started but it is running in a different class as not enough cars yet. We are taking this year to build the car ourselves so we know every single bit of the car. We are aiming to do a shake down and then do the 6 hour race at Silverstone at the end of the year.

I seem to remember that to compete, you needed to buy a kit with all kinds of upgrades. Rollcage (obviously) but also a complete new stand alone ecu/wiring loom with custom tuning etc.
How much is this kit?

Yes, a whole load of us went to watch the first race on BH Monday 1st of May. Only a couple of Z's but they looked great and performed faultlessly. :)

I admire your commitment but don't envy your workload there! Good luck with it, keep the pics/updates coming and as others have said some sort of idea of costs/hours put in would be great for those who may follow suit or are generally just nosey like me!

The cost depends on how far you want to go with it, i.e things like digital dash, interior heating module, and if you want thinks like the brake cooling ducts.

Lot's of the things are a part number of the championship which is a pain but also means that there is good monitoring of foul play etc and makes the racing closer. The last championship we raced in this was not at the forefront of the championship and let it down.

We are probably into about 30 hours work so far at the most but as we get the parts that will increase.

Cost wise can vary but probably £12k+ on parts. we are going pretty comprehensive so will be the higher end of cost prob closer to £17-£18k

Hope we can have the car ready for a shake down in august/September but may be pushing it...
