Bike rack. €90 Saris bones2 or £650 for a Sam Bird?!?!

Post by Chris_D » Wed Mar 22, 2017 4:27 pm

Got a quote this morning from Sam Bird for one of his awesome bike racks.
Sadly I spat my toast out over the cat when I read the total asking price - knocking on the door of 650 sponds!!!

As nice as his rack is (that sounds weird init) I think I'm going for the Saris bones 2 or 3. I can't justify the cost of the Bird rack sadly.

Current rack. 12Kg, 35% heavier than the bike!

Bike rack. €90 Saris bones2 or £650 for a Sam Bird?!?!

£650?!! Wow that's must be quite some rack!

I think I've mentioned it before, but I use a Saris Bones 2 and can't fault it so it's definitely a no brainer to me. Not sure how I'd feel about resting it against the rear window of the Coupe like that, but no problems on the Roadster!

Or just keep the current set up as it's similar? What's making you want to change?

The sheer weight of my rack is the incentive to get a new one. I estimate 35% heavier than the bike (8kg) so around 20kg combined weight and even though i drive like a nun with the bike mounted i still feel u easy about the damage that weight can do to the paint and boot.
What weight is urs carrying?
Was tempted to get a Solo but it doesnt have side straps :?

Aah fair enough. Mine is a cheap ally bike (for the moment...fancy carbon is on the summer wish list :D ) and weighs around 12kg if I remember correctly, so I would think that yours would be no problem.

I had a look at the solo too, but couldn't figure out how it would fit on the car. Found a couple of photos online but the bike looked awfully close to the floor, can't find them now though of course! And yes, lack of straps would worry me a little too!

yeah, it's def a wheels-off affair for the solo!
what carbon bike are you gonna go for? i got the Merlin Fuse and can't fault it. It's basically a rebranded Ridley. There's me thinking I was being all patriotic and buying british!

I've got a sportive booked in june and will have to go in the zed. I fully intend to get a saris bones 2 (or 3) as it can be used on both our cars and then also any future cars (the zed is a keeper and wont be going anywhere though)
I'll be putting wheels in the boot and then frame on the rack so shouldn't cover the lights or number plate. Should be plenty of room and can then get the roof off too!

I'm looking into getting a Ribble. A few of my mates have them and only have good things to say, and they're so cheap (relatively)! I haven't quite worked out which one to go for yet though.

On the plus side, I may use your reasoning as further evidence to the other half that i need a new bike "...but this one's so heavy it might damage the car. Obviously it's cheaper to get a new bike than a new car..." utterly foolproof!

Good choice on the ribble, heard good things too
Looking to get a 2nd carbon bike as the Merlin isnt UCI certified sadly. Didnt buy it for racing, just fitness and exploring but i'm thinking about doing some sportives and crits this year and the organisers here in benelux are a bit picky about that sort of thing. Zzzz

Im currently looking for a bike rack also. Any idea how the saris bones would fit on a roadster? Where would the straps go to hold the rack in place?
