What have you done to your car today?

Post by Sludgepump » Fri Nov 08, 2019 6:00 pm

Funnily enough I've just acquired an 06 3 litre (66,000 miles) and checked the DISA fully expecting it to be a bit fed up. Turns out, its
working fine, springs back nicely and no wear on the spindle so well pleased with that. I've removed the Japanese ETC card reader
without any problem and solved the dead cigarette lighter by cleaning the centre contact at the bottom of the lighter socket so SatNav now working fine. Then I checked the roof drains and they are all clear. Good productive afternoon. :driving:

How did you check the drains? Sometimes they can be clear at the bottom but blocked at the top :o

Hi Rob
I 'rodded' them with a length of curtain wire. I didn't pour any water in from the top to test though :?

Where was your ETC card reader? Mine's built into the rear view mirror so I can't do anything about it. It only pops up with a quick warning on the RVM that the card is missing then disappears so not really a worry for me. My son's E92 has a warning on the iDrive that wants acknowledging (or it times out after a while as well, I think).Wonder if I can code out his iDrive warning? Couldn't see anything in Carly, but I could try NCS I suppose.

Cars milsage is around 88,000

Doing them now as it is now SORNED for winter

Looks like I will be adding a lot of other bits to the list. Due to the ball joints resisting removal they will all need replacement (rubber covers damaged.) including the track rod ends. So all the front suspension bushes and ball joint and ARB bushes will be changed while it is in bits

Engine mounts perishing (starting to perish)

Cross member paint or powder coat, light rust in the exposed places

Oil pump as recommended my Mr Vanos

My ETC reader was an aftermarket one and simply needed to be disconnected and removed. It was glued to a panel under the steering wheel so a quick wipe over with cellulose thinners and it's gone. The wiring harness for it was tucked away out of sight. If it's built-in I guess it's more difficult

Great work. Those bearings look alright for 90k too - only a tiny bit of copper visible.

I’d love to sort the surface rust on the front crossmember - it looks horrible when you hang shiny new bits off it! The only concern would be that it’s a box section with quite complicated internal shapes around the welded mounting points. Are you getting it internally coated or treated too? Might be worth seeing how the likes of Redish etc do it as I’d imagine this is routine for them.

I can recommend Vibra-Technics mounts if you’re going to replace yours.

My Alcantara project is well under way. Re fitted the headlight switch trim today and fitted a DAB antenna.
the long passenger side dash piece is almost ready to go back in but will have to wait until next weekend now

Gave it a good clean and polish having covered a good few miles during the last week on wet and quite dirty roads. That was before any winter salt went down. I’ll not be taking it out on damp roads again this side of spring now that gritting has begun. It’s all clean and shiny again now and tucked up in the garage hooked up to the solar Optimate.
