Oil useage
Anyone got any ideas regarding oil useage? My oil light came on some time back not too long after being serviced. I took it back and they asked me to keep an eye on it. 1500 miles later I took it back in as per their request and it had used half a litre. They said they'd only be concerned if it was using more than 0.7 litres every 1000km which I thought was high.
Any thoughts?

Which engine?
I have seen 3 litre engines use as much as 1 litre per 1000 km, but the one I had for example used absolutely nothing.

Oil useage
Mine used approx 1 ltr in 10k miles. I've seen it discussed in other threads. Varies per engine. Definitely no mayo build up or coolant problems? No visible leaks?
If not, I wouldn't be too concerned

Oops good question. It's a 3.0 litre pre-facelift 54 plate with 35k mileage.pvr wrote:Which engine?

Re: Oil useage
Had my 3.0 zed for 7 months now and have used just over 3 litres of oil in 6,000 miles.
Mileage is a real mixture of short, around town trips and 250 mile motorway blasts...I think the short journeys use the oil.

Re: Oil useage
Unless you have a leak, the only oil consumed is through the combustion process, that is oil lubricating the piston and rings escaping into the combustion chamber and being burnt. The greater the gap between rings and piston liner equals more oil consumed, this could be that you have an engine that was built at the upper limit of the tolerances, i.e. large liner small rings.
The downside of this is excessive oil consumption, the plus is an engine with less friction and thus more power
It could also indicate that you have a very high mileage engine or it was continually thrashed to an inch of it's life fom cold I.e. an ex demonstrator car

Re: Oil useage
So I would say that it's just the tolerancing then, not sure about the argument of short vs long journey, when the engine is cold what the gaps are like, compared to when it's hot, which will depend on the linear expansion of each material in the cylinder block.
Aluminium has a higher coefficient of linear expansion than steel meaning that the cylinder block will get bigger than the rings as temperature rises, equating to greater losses when hot, but I'm only surmising here.
If you have an M then they will be similar due to the cast iron block.

Re: Oil useage
I'd go for another theory of the car burning more oil on the overrun at higher rpms.
I noticed an increase in consumption when doing large amounts of engine braking in the Alps

Re: Oil useage
Also depends what oil you have in there, too.
The Alpina 3.4 'S' engine is a known oil consumer at usually 1000km/l of 0W30, with some engines using nothing at all. However, there is the option given of increasing the oil viscosity on ours to 10W60, but that robs a few horses, so I persevere topping-up the thin stuff.

Re: Oil useage
Agree, depends on the Oil, used a Ltr in my motorbike with Silkolene over 1200 miles, so changed back to Shell and no oil consumption. My 2.5si used about 1.5 Ltr over 3000 miles, though put this down to only using it for short summer journeys.2alpsade wrote:Also depends what oil you have in there, too.

How often are you using the car. Do you do long or short journeys?Sportbilly wrote:Anyone got any ideas regarding oil useage? My oil light came on some time back not too long after being serviced. Re: Oil useage
I'm a little worried about mine. I haven't put any oil in at all! Coming up to 1 years ownership in April. Done around 7k miles now.
I do fairly frequent checks of the level using the dash and it always says OK. What kind of capacity do the engines have for oil?

I wouldnt worry if it hasn't used oil. If the oil level is ok, no problem.RichIbizaSport wrote:I'm a little worried about mine. I haven't put any oil in at all! Coming up to 1 years ownership in April. Done around 7k miles now.
