Headunit Clearance Woes...

Post by Citizen-Erased » Thu Jun 17, 2021 10:39 pm

Evening all,

I finally decided to get around to changing over my head unit a few weeks back. Straight forward job, ive done this a few times on many cars.... or so I thought. I have a Sony MEX-BT4000u https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-MEX-BT40 ... B007RAVPZU which has been excellent.

First thing I noticed was that my fascia adapter https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/401004081498 had some fitment issues.

Initally, I noticed that fitment was poor, the fascia felt like it was warping in on the mount. I noticed this was down to the fascia plate not correctly seating on the two locating pins eitherside of the hold headunit, circled yellow.

Out came Mr Dremel who quickly solved the issue.

Then when I got the Connects2 and the power / ISO etc. all lined up I turned the unit and all worked fine. I disconnected everything and pulled the fascia back off, screwed the unit to the "cage" replacements pictured below and tried to get the unit to sit flush with the Fascia. NOT A CHANCE :headbang:

It appears my unit is too deep, the ISO conector on the back of the head unit wants to sit right up against the brace / bracket right at the back of the CD player area. Even being super careful with wires and making as much space for myself as I could would not allow it to fit.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Alternatively, if its a case of this bracket cannot be removed without further dremel or cutting of the area, can anyone recommend a cheap but decent Bluetooth head unit, ideally that uses the 3.5mm jack for the steering controls?

My Alpine has a mic cable that come out where the support bracket is, I just used a cone cutter where the mic needed to go and job was jobbed.

As for fascia fitment, never had an issue with the connects2 fascia, I’ve done my own car and two customers cars and never had an issue. Patience is key.

Air vents, for a better fit, gently bend down the two plastic tabs on the base of the vents, this will help it sit better when reassembled.

Pic is my fascia with a DEH80PRS, tried it, didn’t like it so went back to an Alpine unit.

I had to do a bit of fettling to get it all to fit properly. Those C shaped brackets had to be shaved down to allow the air vents to fit. Not too difficult to be honest, but shouldn't have to do it really.

I routed the cables behind the metal frame (behind the HU) to ensure it went back fine.

All done now thankfully.

Cheers gents.

It's just the physical length and cable position, not the kit itself.

As for the fascia plate, it measured wrong so no amount of patience would fix that...

My head unit is a pioneer mvh-s520dab with Bluetooth and is integrated to the steering wheel controls.

Good so far.

Some images of installation.

It doesn't have a cd but I think the length may be standard.

One thing to mention, when I installed mine I took out the panel beneath the heater controls so I could feel around behind the head unit to ensure no cables were trapped.

Yeah im going to have another crack tomorrow with that removed,

Its less the depth of the unit and more the positioning of the ISO port outlets...
