Are we Zed owners becoming more socialable ?

Post by GasheadIan » Thu May 06, 2021 8:09 pm

Quick drive tonight in sunshine and 3rd time in a row I have been out in Zed and see another Zed coming the other way and we both wave at each other
Maybe it’s only an E85 thing ?

I have this before at some other place. Can't quite remember where now. Us e89 owners all wave but because of our age by the time we have reacted it is too bloody late for the other car to see it.

Never get to wave as us E86 coupe owners are an elite and rare sighting :poke: Joking aside I would always wave as I did when I was a biker when lower speeds allowed

It's in the E85 rule book.

1. See Your Z4 for the first time today.
2. Smile
3. Start Engine.
4. Smile
5. Check Weather.
6. Lower Roof.
7. Wish you hadn't cos tis raining.
8. Smile
9. Enjoy a fine drive and wave at any thing that takes your fancy.
10. Smile.

My good ladyfriend Laura takes immense enjoyment from waving like an idiot (sarcastically) to other Z4 drivers here in NL when she is a passenger in my Zed because:
a) she think's the 'owners camaraderie' is old-fashioned, twee and rather ridiculous
b) other Dutch Z4 drivers think that she is actually the driver (RHD car in LHD land)
c) she delights in exploiting any opportunity to wind me up

I relish the opportunity to wave, although it seems not all E85 owners wave back and i have completely given up on the E89 owners as they seem to give off a slightly snobbish vibe.... sometimes it seems they try their very hardest not to notice me drive past them flashing and waving in a 30 zone :tumbleweed:

I always wave from my E89, at ANY other Z4, or Z3 if I see one.
However, sometimes I do miss one if there's heavy traffic, junctions etc.
There's also the issue of light reflections on windscreens. Sometimes it is impossible to see the oncoming driver so you don't know if they've waved or not.
At least with a proper Z you can have the roof down and wave above the windscreen to be sure you've been seen.

I've had a toot from a lady driving towards me in an identical E89, we must of looked liked something off Hart to Hart! Apart from that no other real waves... except from neds and white van drivers, but their waves are a little bit different and always accompanied by them shouting something that sounds like 'Tanker!' :scratchhead:

Andy, they should be worried about their own fuel consumption... Buckfast! I wonder if my E89 would run better on it :P

I've always gone for the wave although the lack of responses means that it's a sort of lifting the right hand off the slightly off the steering wheel more often than not these days. But, as I experienced in my MX5 days, as soon as I think "sod this for a game of conkers, I'm not going to bother waving any more", you pass another MX5 / Z4 whose drivers' are waving madly at me and I'm the miserable so and so going in the other direction.
So i'm still doing the timid, semi wave type of thing :D

Always look out for a wave opportunity, been either ignored or not seen many times but get the odd one back. The worst was probably sat at the lights looking across at an E86 with the intention of showing my admiration with not even a glance in my direction. I’m not worthy?
