Best oil for N52 tick

Clearly you are the expert oilman, Mitsubishi, (remember their engines in the 80's, 90's and today even were prone to the dreaded lifter tick) and Mercedes, starters for two would tend to disagree with you. But what do I know?
If the car were mine, and a change in oil brand failed to halt the noise even after trying the BMW recommended fix, surely an explorative foray into the upper reaches of the cylinder head should be on the cards?
The noise may be the beginning of some more major.

Best oil for N52 tick

I hear what you say about snake oil chaps, but then I was recommended this product:

https://www.powerenhancer.co.uk/archoil ... ifier.html

It is ester based and contains Mo-WS2 nano particles, so hopefully it will modify my current (almost new) oil to something more like the Millers EE Performance. They offer a money back guarantee if you're not satisfied, so if the tick remains I'll get a refund and no loss to me.
I'll let you know if it works.

So whats the consensus for N52 lifter tick. Everyday, annual oil service. 5w30 over 100k miles?

Personally, change your oil regular around 6-8K with a genuine Mann Filter and use it as it was deigned for: a sporting drive. My lifter tick has decreased to only occasional after long stands, as I use it as my daily covering 25-30K. Mpg average 38,1 Happy days

Best oil for N52 tick

5w40 Quantum from ECP cured mine, the car stood for 10 days and there was no tick on start up.
I appreciate others comments recommending quality oil however, I change my oil every 6 months regardless (usually coincides with a 40% discount code) so it’s a relatively cheap option.

Seems like good advice. Mine was ticking a lot until last weekend when I drove 200 miles and redlined it a few times en route. All seems quiet now so she certainly needs to be used as designed. Short trips etc definitely make matters worse.

Experienced the tick regularly till I switched to Castrol Edge 0w-40 since then 3 or 4 years and no tick.
Depending on use I change every 6-12 months. Do about 6k per year.

Best oil for N52 tick

As an update, I tried Castrol Magnatec 5w30 for my last oil change (about 3 months ago) and I haven't heard the N52 tick since.
It could, of course, be due to the warm weather and that I'm using the car a bit more so I'll report back if the tick returns.

I'll give Edge a go next time as I've been bringing bottles of it back from trips the U.S. (They get it in 5 quarts bottles for less than we get 4 litres in the UK)

From Googling, I understand that Magnatec is better for the engine at startup and Edge is better for everything else :|

Forgive me as this may be a noob questions, but, why does everyone use different branded oils when BMW uses Castrol and even has the branding on the filler cap? I’ve just been on OPIE oils and they don’t even recommend Castrol for my Z4

I had a tick on my e46 when using Castrol Edge. No issues with Mobil 1 or Shell Helix. Kept away from Castrol ever since.

When most of our cars were built BMW used Castrol Edge oil, but several years ago they swapped to Shell Helix Ultra.

But most other brands make a product that meets the BMW LL01 (M54 engines) or LL04 (N52 engines) so they should be fine.

My Indy uses Shell in my 3 Series and Castrol in my MC so I top up with the same brands.

I haven't bothered trying different brands to cure the N52 tick as using the car solves it!
Coupes because stunning!

Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

I like the thought of sticking with Castrol. I know BMW swapped over to another oil, but IMO, the N52 was developed and built using Castrol, so can’t go wrong.

Interesting thread this one, I love an oil and filter change. 😂
