Show us your wheels: Width and Offset

Post by inkey$ » Mon Dec 07, 2020 6:29 pm

So since I started this thread, I’ve bought a coupe with MV2’s. These are:

- staggered 18 inch wheels
- Width: 8 front / 8.5 rear
- Offset (ET): 47 front / 50 rear

Im looking at a few wheel options - both still 18 inch, but with the following measurements:

Option 1
- Width: 8.5 or 10 front / 10 rear
- Offset (ET): 20 front / 20 rear

Option 2
- Width: 8.5 front / 9.5 rear
- Offset (ET): 35 front / 33 or 35 rear

I like a flush wheel with my arch and not too much camber if possible. Would I be looking at needing any spacers for the above 2 x options?

These are the Option 1 style Im looking at...ARC-8 reps.

Option 2...Avant Garde M359...

Ideally want a dull silver as opposed to a graphite or gunmetal finish.

Thanks! still really chuffed with them! like you i like a nice flush stance so machined the spacers trialed the fitment, took a bit more off tried it took a bit more off, etc etc until i was happy,

Image
that is an 8.5" rim et43, with 17mm of spacer, giving a combined offset of 26.
So with your options ARC1's would stick out 6mm more than this on an 8.5j, and i really don't think a 10j will fit on the front without poking out a lot or fouling the strut, they will also make steering heavier and increase tramlining, im not sure i would really want to go any more then 9j wide on the front.
the avant garde's would take 9-10mm of spacer for a decent flush fit

Image

That is the rear on mine, again et43 8.5j this time with 14mm of spacer giving an overall offset of 29

regards the sizes you are looking at, any reason you are looking to go wider on the rears, 10j is quite a lot more width and 9.5j is also a fair bit more, i was amazed when messing with fitments what difference a single mm made, i was also quite keen to keep as much unsprung rotational mass out as this can have big effects on handling acceleration ride etc and less weight has to be good! (i think i saved something approaching 12kg in total and can definitely tell the difference!) also smaller tyres are cheaper!

your options:
the arc 8 8.5j would be 9mm further out, as a 10j just over 28mm further out than my example!
the avant gardes as an 8.5j a 5 or 6mm spacer should give you the same as my example as a 9.5j et 35 it will be nearly 7mm further out than the example (and 18mm nearer the strut on the inside) as an et33 it will be out 9mm further

both options would look great but realistically fitment does limit your options from what i can see, apologies if any of my maths is out, but i think its correct! there are more pictures of me trying to do the wheel fitment on my project thread if that helps

That’s the exact look I’d want to try and achieve, so thanks for the photos and advice

Honestly, I just really like the look of the Arc’s but I wouldn’t want to realistically go too much further than the MV2’s dimensions. The Avant Garde’s with spacer option could work.

Ultimately I want to try and find is a good looking set of OEM looking, classic CSL/Multispoke style 18 inch wheels, that fit my car without rubbing. Happy to add spacers if it means filling the arch better, and don’t want tyres stretched too much.

The arcs are cool, i struggled to find weights for some of the csl style wheels, some appeared to be pretty heavy! i think the avant garde's could work well, mine came on on mv2's originally and its quite amazing how far in they actually are, the rears are something like 20mm further out now! i have actually gone for narrower tyres and bigger sidewalls and i don't think they look too stretched, riva dtm's? alternatively if you are patient bbs ch and rk's come up for sensibleish money second hand from time to time, that was the sort of thing i was looking for before the ac's came along

Yeah, can’t find a weight for the Arc reps, but my guess is at least 13kg a corner. Think I need to measure the available space on the MV2’s. Might even get me thinking about future suspension options too. Then as you say, keep my eye out for the right set. No real rush, the MV2’s have grown on me a little, and like your car I also have many other jobs to do; including a need to tackle the Monaco blue paintwork/learn to DA polish.

I rushed into getting rid of my mv2's (admittedly they were in a fairly bad way) the 189s were a big improvement, still my biggest regret on the car so far but only because the schnitzers came up so quickly afterwards...anyone want to buy some 189s?? depending on what you are after rotiform mse's might be a good look!

If your paint is anything like as hard as mine you will be fine learning to use a da i started off terrified and am now using reasonably heavy cut compound without fear!

Thanks - I really like them. They’re great wheels actually - forged oem so light (9.1kg) and strong - not bad for a winter wheel for my F30 3 series which is what they were originally on. M tyre sizes with et34 are right on the limit for the front. I have had some rubbing at full compression which has worn a bit of the wheel arch plastic away behind the headlight but I will sort that with some additional camber when I do the front suspension refresh.

The original wheels were 241 style star spokes - same design as the z4 coupe concept although turns out they are 18” rather than 19” on the concept, so never quite looked as good as I’d hope when I spec’d them. Still like them though - need a refurb to something dark. Below is with 15mm front and 20mm rear spacers with front being standard z4 offset 8x18” and rear 8.5x18”.
