166 miles ought to have been enough for it to get the level correct, but I can't see it using half a litre in that distance without you noticing.
I used to make a point of checking the level every time I used the car (and still do with my 3 Series) just to be sure it was working!
In your position I'd keep checking and if it still keeps giving you that reading I'd wait until it dropped one more mark then add 500ml.
BTW I notice you didn't get a handbook with your car. If you PM me with your e-mail address I can send you one as a pdf.

Strange, no?
The 3 series oil check is very accurate. I find it updates immediately when topping.
I do have the manual, thanks! Think the original OP didn’t

My 3 Series (2005 model) takes ages to register a change, much like my last E86 did. But my 1st E86 was pretty quick - it seems to vary from car to car.
My mistake on the manual, but the offer is open to the OP (or anyone else) anyway!

So, passed 200 mile mark, still showing over 500ml short. Just wondering, could it be a faulty sensor?
Or, is it cus I changed to a different oil perhaps: I’ve gone from Castrol 0W30, to Millers Nanotech 5W30..?

So you supplied a 5litre + 2 x 1 litre bottles to your indy who then returned the half litre ?Vijay wrote: ↑Sun Oct 11, 2020 7:03 pmSo, passed 200 mile mark, still showing over 500ml short. Just wondering, could it be a faulty sensor?

That miller's nanotech is a very good oil. Good choice!
If it is still showing low, I can only assume that it is indeed slightly low. Pop a little in and see if it registers before suspecting the sensor.
You never know, some could have been spilt when the change was done. Or used to flush the last of the old oil out of the sump when draining.

I don't know exactly how they work but I would have thought that if there was a problem with the sensor you just wouldn't get a reading.
Where it is sitting now is smack in the middle of the tolerance so won't do any harm, so like I said I'd just wait and see if it drops another bar on the display.
Or if you aren't comfortable with that you could just put in 250ml and see if it goes up one bar on the display.

Forgot to mention, Mr Tidy, it has indeed dropped another bar! So three dashes now to the right. Don’t get how it’s dropped further as it’s only done 40 odd miles since the last check.Mr Tidy wrote: ↑Sun Oct 11, 2020 8:08 pm I don't know exactly how they work but I would have thought that if there was a problem with the sensor you just wouldn't get a reading.

Maybe the nanotech is so superb it’s clinging to the insides

I would have thought the fact it has dropped seems to suggest it is working. I'd put 250ml in and see if it goes up one, then if it did add another 250ml and go from there.
Does seem odd it is dropping that quick though. Could it be leaking from the drain plug - some garages don't always replace the sealing washer!

Well if you didn't have a consumption issue before the Ins2 & there are no visible signs of oil below the car you would have to assume that 6/6.5litres didn't go in at the service Cynical it may seem but the garage may well have kept the spare 1 litre bottle & only added 5.5 litresVijay wrote: ↑Sun Oct 11, 2020 7:57 pmYup!mr wilks wrote: ↑Sun Oct 11, 2020 7:34 pmSo you supplied a 5litre + 2 x 1 litre bottles to your indy who then returned the half litre ?Vijay wrote: ↑Sun Oct 11, 2020 7:03 pm So, passed 200 mile mark, still showing over 500ml short. I would top up the remaining oil you have left & then check the level daily to monitor , 6.5litre is the capacity , i've only ever supplied 6 litres for N52 oil service to my indy & never had a low oil reading .
