High Mileage Z4s!!

Post by 3djam » Tue Jun 16, 2009 10:29 am

Hi,

My car has now done 32k miles. I was wondering how these cars cope with high mileage.

Has anyone done over 100k yet? Have you had any issues?

Thanks in advance.

Look at some of the other BMWs the same drivetrain is fitted to. They last forever, the 2.0L engine is a repmobile special engine for the 320.

Rear springs seem to be consumables - one of my rears has just gone and this seems quite a common problem. Also my car has a leaking propshaft seal that`s causing a ticking noise, it has 31400miles on it. I`m not disappointed though, some problems are to be expected. I think drivetrain wise these cars are easily good for 150,000-200,000 miles or more. The cars are setup stiff though so some issues might appear if you frequent bad roads. Recently I`ve been having a very fun commute but have occassional hit some real potholes - not surprise a spring has broken

Its not the car that will suffer from high mileage its the resale value :(

Thats the dilema i have, keep it or buy another with half the mileage while mines still worth something.

I think im more or less set on keeping it as i cant see my smile getting much bigger just because the speedo says 20k instead of 60k.
Mathematically which would be the better option? Say if i were to sell in 2 years which option would loose me the most cash? Mine will probably have close to 80k by then and worth 5/6 grand say.
I would have to sell my current car and spend about another 5 grand to buy a low miler, which in 2 years i guess might sell for 8/9 grand if it had 40k on the clock.
So i would probably be 2 grand down or thereabouts over the 2 years by buying another car with lower miles once resale is factored. Seems more sense to keep the old girl i think :D Anyone think of a counter theory?

I would say keep the old girl. I consdered the same thing - getting a late 2008/early 2009 3.0 Coupe with <5k miles but with trade-in and then forecourt price for the new car you`ll use a lot of money there (unless you sell yours privately and buy privately). Personally I would only consider it if I wanted to upgrade to an ///M. If not, just keep the Si and get you`re monies worth out of it and sod the resale. I really like the Z4 and can`t see me being without one for quite a while yet.

Currently I`m doing about 350 miles a week through winding country roads but my milage can be as high as 28k a year. The depreciation will now be less on my car than if I were to buy a nearly new 2000 mile car and put the same milage on it.

mines on 68k, its a daily drive but i only do around 8k a year, plan on keeping the car for 5 years, so when its 11 years old it will have 100k ish on it, i think this is a car ill maintain and if it gets pricey buy a 2nd car and keep the z for summers, but thats years off yet, having too much fun :driving:

this is a bit of a highjack but i have exactly the same noise and miles on mine. Does it tick with every rotation? how can you check or how did you know it was a propshaft seal?

thanks

I have over 72,000 miles on my 3.0 Z4. It's a 2003 and still looks great and runs great. No major problems with it yet. I had some smaller things but the extended warranty I paid for with the dealership took care of those.

To be honest I wasn`t aware of the problem. I noticed the ticking once but over the years I`ve owned quite a few BMW`s and some made various noises that were just normal (E30`s for example didn`t have the quiestest of engines). As the milage is creeping up, any noises I jsut put down to that. When I took the car in to get my suspension looked at 5 weeks ago due to a creaking noise, that`s when they noticed the leaking propshaft seal. I think the creaking I was hearing eventually ended as a broken spring - at the time 5 weeks ago the suspension was deemed to be okay but 4 weeks later the spring broke.
