18" Ellipsoid wheels refurb.

Post by lezp81 » Thu May 16, 2019 9:14 am

I have just got hold of a set of 18" ellipsoid wheels which are need for a refurb and new tyres.

I am going to attempted to do a DIY job to keep the cost down s i need to get 4 tyres as well.

My question is:
1. do i do the refurb with the old tyres on? No need to worry about masking off the tyres as they will be binned.
2. do i get the old tyres taken off and then refurb before getting new tyres on? Will i run the risk of my hard work being ruined by the tyre fitter?
3. or, do I need get the 4 tyres replaced now, then do the refurb, taking time to mask off the tyres? This way i don't ned to worry about any scuff etc from tyre fit?

The wheels have the usual kerbing all around each wheel. Also, the inner side of the rim is corroded.

Anyone got any experience in doing a DIY job on wheels.

If your Binning the wheels, then I'd remove them before doing the refurb.

Easier then to strip and repaint the entire alloy.

Regarding fitting tyres afterwards, they shouldn't damage them and if they do then say you are charging them the cost of a refurb. Then you can get it done properly :D

BTW, there is a firm in Birmingham who only charges £25 a wheel for a proper refurb

£20 if its a bare rim... worthwhile even if it's an hour or two away! Just maybe use a car with a bigger boot!

For 20 a wheel, it's worth paying a man. You'd be amazed at how much bloody paint you use when doing a DIY job...
