z4 2.0 Sport - Opinions & Performance

Post by 3djam » Sat May 16, 2009 10:14 am

Hi,

I have a z4 2.0 Sport and love it to bits!

I do find I have to thrash it slightly to get the best performance though. Does anyone know of any performance mods to improve the 2.0, air filters etc?

Also, I'd be grateful to hear of your thoughts and experiences of the z4 2.0.

Many thanks in advance.

Use Shell V-Power all the times. You can add 10bhp, 18NM, and 13Lb/Ft by using Superchips (£234).
Current BMW: 640d Gran Coupe M Sport (F06), 118d SE (F20).
Previous BMW: Z4 sDrive23i M Sport (E89), 318i Sport (F30), 120d SE (F20), Z4 2.5i Sport Roadster (E85), 523i Sport (E60), 323Ci (E46), 523i SE (E39), 318i (E36).

Hi and welcome,

Thrash it' well that always sounds negative to me...

Frankly you will have to push it hard to move it quickly as it's the smallest and lowest powered unit available and while no slouch was surely targetted to those wishing to keep costs down of purchase price, insurance, fuel, etc., and more cruise, than 0-60. Of course you have the nice light engine to be pointy in the corners.

IMHO there's not a lot you can do as BMW are already good at getting the best out of their engines and aside fuel you'll put a lot into mapping, exhausts, intakes and feel little if any benefit, although increased noise may make it sound faster.

If you wanted more then really you need to change to one of the 6 cylinder engines ideally 2.5 or bigger

Guys,

Many thanks for your replies.

When I say 'thrash it', I mean there doesn't seem to be much torque below 3500-4000 rpm. That said, I have been used to driving diesel cars up to now !! I still find myself putting the car into 5/6 gear far too early. Again, years of driving diesels has made me slightly lazy probably.

Overall I am very pleased with the way the car drives, and I did make the decision to go for the 2.0 based on its economy. Can't have it all ways I guess!

Thanks again.

Well if you've driven a diesel then everything will seem to be way up the rev range. When I hire them on holidays I can never get over all that torgue at the low end and nothing higher up the revs.

Welcomw to the forum.
Unfortunately we (me too) have the valvetronic engines that almost nothing can be done regarding improvements.
These engines (especially on the Z4) are giving the full of what they can do, being very economic in fuel in parallel.

So enjoy it as is, while be proud of having one of the most modern type of engines existing.

When I got my 3.0lsi I thought it was pretty un-responsive compared to my 330cd, that thing used to shift, bags of torgue. Must say if you drive the Z right its hell of a lot faster. You just have to get used to the different way in which the power is delivered.

Hi just new to the forum so be gentle with me
I have a 2.0 z4 also, coZ I'm doin 80 miles a day to work and back I had to get something I could get reasonable mpg, but never expected to get 42mpg, fantastic!
I have been thinking about mods as well but finding it hard to get good info
Does anyone think a turbo is possible/feasible and if yes would the engine handle it?
We can't let audi drivers have all the fun!

Has anyone had a remap done and would a sports exhaust help?
:D

I think the trouble with all mods, is big layour for very little return, and certainly you will not get the MPG etc you are getting now, a bit of re mapping will help, not convinced by the shell power argument tho !! yes an air filter new exhaust and turbo will up things, but ............

Truth is, swap it for a bigger engine Z4, it will be cheaper.

BTW welcome to the new guys

Welcome to the Forum lads!
Mate's got a 2 litre sport and it's a lovely car that handles superbly. He's been on many drives with me and always manages to stick right on my tail around the twisties

I'd forget about mods except maybe a sports exhaust for a better sound. Enjoy it for what it is, and don't worry about what it isn't!

Spikey welcome.
As said no serious improvements to a valvetronic engine.
This engine management system of our engine is so complex that almost nothing can be done.
Several tries were done in the past (turbo, compressors) with no success, thats why you cannot get good info.

You know what they say.........Theres no replacement for displacement,,,,, and thats about it. I found it a shock coming from 280 bhp t0 150 but the turn in and relative lack of understeer is a dream. As far as 2 litre units go BMW have built a honey, its smooth ,tractable and gives its best at all times. The only thing I would nt mind tuning on the 2.0 is the suspension. I feel that under pressure in high speed dual and motorway bends it feels numb wallows about a bit. I think spring/damper rates could be modified especially as I don t need to cushion low speed bumps with the loss of the rft s'
Remember, you can turbocharge, remap ,tweek fiddle all you like, its no substitute for power on tap from something bigger
look at it this way,you driving a quality roadster, its a BMW, so feel a sense of pride when you pass the MR2 roadsters,MGF s MX5 s etc (All nice cars but most are 1.8 and not built to German standards)
NB Having said that I m not sure that I think the MGF s are any good! :fuelfire:

The engine in the 2.0l is british built aswell

I think its a great little engine, just enough power and performs well in the twistys. Compared to the 2.0l in the MX-5 sport and its awesome, the MX-5 sounds like a diesel.
