Steering Angle Sensor?

Post by Bobbthemonkey » Mon Mar 11, 2019 11:30 pm

Hello,

First time poster here. I recently got a 2008 Z4 3.0 and have been loving it. I bought the car with a few lights on but they weren't too serious. The three lights that were/are on are the tire pressure warning, a light bulb warning light, and a yellow Brake light. I was told by my mechanic who is a BMW specialist that it was the steering angle sensor and that he didn't have the machine to clear it. He had a normal machine that would clear the codes but they would come right back after. I've been searching around and have been reading that you either go to the dealership or you find someone who has the genuine BMW code machine. I'm a little apprehensive to go and pay $100-$200 (probably) just for them to plug it in and clear it. Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you!

I have the same lights. I cleared them with INPA software. It will also tell you the error codes. It might only be one of your wheel speed sensors being dirty or intermittent.
Are you sure your specialist is really an expert if he doesn't have software? The software is free.

He's used to more of the older generations of Bimmers, before a lot of the gadgets were put in. They suggested I just go to a dealer although I reckon I'll ask if they've thought of downloading the new software. I'm not even sure what kind of reader they were using. How much do one of those run in your own experience if I were to just buy one on my own and clear it myself? Also what brand, model, etc. is yours?

Diagnostic cable is about $25 and software download is free. It can be tricky to install. Must be installed in windows xp compatability mode.

I just head about the Carly device. Do you think that could clear the fault codes?

You probably need to recalibrate the steering angle sensor which can be done in INPA. Carly will reset it but thats all.
