Hi everyone,
Just wanted to get a idea as to whether I am paying over the odds. A local garage has been looking into a NSR vibration, rubbing noise, vibration etc.. its been a bit of a tricky one to pin point as the wheel bearing wasnt that obvious untiil the hub was stripped. Initially they thought it was a handbrake shoe that had broken/come loose and was vibrating/rattling, but on inspection it wasnt that as they arent that old apparently, so they stripped the hub to find that the bearing is shot, it will be £270 all in, does that sound fair? naturally they have spent time trying to troubleshoot it etc.. I am relieved its not a diff problem! so maybe I should see it as a bargain and celebrate with a curry tonight??!!
Any thoughts on costs? anyone had similar work done?

Garage cost- rear wheel bearing
Had mine done 8 weeks ago. I bought the bearings at about £80 for the 2 and was close to £200 in labour at a specialist so sounds about right. He said they had to use a 10 ton press to remove them and even then damaged their machine so certainly a job for a garage

Thanks Craigbeal, that makes me a feel a bit better! doesnt sound like a DIY job, not an easy one anyway.
I have never used this garage before so was hoping they are pretty fair as they are a 30 second walk from my office, would be nice to find a good garage so close.

I had one fitted (that I supplied) for about £70 as they mis-quoted. £100 a side seems fair and it's not a job I'd want to do!

What would they have been using that press for? The bearing itself should just pull off (albeit with a set of good pullers).
I'm guessing it was super seized?
[edit] Never mind I didn't realise the rears were so much harder than the fronts! I understand now. That's one to check off the DIY list. [/edit]

The bill has just gone up another £100 as the 'hub drive flange' is screwed too.. its the bit the bearings fits on to.

Sounds like they have buggered it to me. Assume they aren’t a bmw specialist.

If they gave you a quote, rather than an estimate, then it's their problem. Pay under protest if you need to.
