i will translate..
Mate wants to buy my existing wheels, they are 8.5 J all round
What bigger tyres can he get away with, above the 225x40x18 set of tyres already on there ..

Still little use without knowing the specifics of vehicle the mate intends fitting the wheels to .
They could be going on a VW Transporter so 245 55 18s would be fine or a 5 series where 235 50 or 235 45 might be best
Does "mate" want to "get away " with wider ? or taller ? or narrower & smaller :?

Ideally yes , the offsets are helpful but its a confusing post in general to give you a specific answer .
Assume you are currently using them & they have tyres on so why would he want to know what tyres he can "get away with " :?
Is he not happy with the sizes as they are ? Is he wanting to drop the car & squeeze the wheels in or is he looking to add rubber & fill the arches ?

Current tyres are crap so he wants to change but fill the arches slightly, and wider tyres if he can to help protect the alloys,as he thinks the 225 is the minimal you should fit on 8.5J wheels

Indeed. So these are aftermarket ones you're selling?
Without the Et numbers 235-45-18 x 4 or 245-40 x 40 will work.
Or 255 35 18 x 2 & 235 4018 a option or 245 40 18 x 2 & 225 45 18 another :)

Would 235/40/18 on the front of my 3.0 S3 e85 AC snitzers be out of the question by the way?

8j or 8.5j if you can easily run your fingers around the tyre without hitting the arch liner near reflector no reason at all why you couldn't go 235-4018
