Should my roof lock when down?

Post by synthedup » Tue Jan 22, 2019 12:25 pm

Hi all,

Should my roof lick when its lowered?

I have been running my hardtop for a few months now and my roof is squeezing/moving up and down making a noise on bumpy roads.

Do others have this issue? Or should the roof be locked firmly in place once its down?

Cheers :)

I think only pre-facelifts had the lock fitted.

I had the same squeak when my hardtop was fitted. I wasn't aware of what the cause was though.

Interesting. So the roof is just sitting there then :? I would have thought the light would be on and off over every bump, if there was not something holding it down. I have no idea how the mechanism works though. Hopefully some one does.

The hydraulic system provides a degree of security as it will resist movement unless the bypass is activated

As has been said BMW deleted it on later cars around 07 plate onwards, you can remove them on pre cars aswell with no ill effects. I think BMW removed them as they realised it was overkill and they were actually causing a few minor issues. I removed mine as it was causing a squeak from the manual release button on the bulkhead as well as slightly marring the roof lining when going up and down. Mines been gone since the summer of 2015 and I've had no issues with lights etc...
