Breathing difficulties.

Post by Jamie25 » Fri Jan 18, 2019 7:54 pm

Did a basic service on my wife's '56 plate A4 yesterday. Popped the box open to replace the air filter and was surprised how much detritus was in there. Had the car about six months so first time I'd been in the air box. Then I noticed a pre air filter filter in the ducting that was somewhat clogged....

.

Can't believe the engine was running! It's a 3.0tdi and it was running fine but seems to be smoother now!

I thought about using it as an air filter. Really can't get over the fact it seemed to have been running okay before hand. Now I'm happy with the oil level after the oil change I'll give it a blast and maybe it'll be dramatically different.
Makes you wonder how much difference these aftermarket air filters make. If this standard one was throttled that much and appeared to be running fine.

One thing to watch out for Jamie. There is a pollen filter behind glove box. Check it out and see if all looks good. The filter housing is not made to last and breaks down over time. If this happens then the water that drains from the windscreen can make its way into the cab, ending up under the passenger floor carpet where your comfort control unit is.
Unfortunately I speak from experience. I fixed the pollen filter housing and pulled up carpet where there was a lot of water. Dehumidifier sorted this out but the damage was done and I have several electrical problems linked to the comfort control unit.
It’s worth keeping an eye on it pal.

Thanks for the heads up, sounds like good advice. Only one previous keeper and on the face of it they looked after it but only by way of service schedule.

Under the battery tray was full of similar rotting leaves etc. That blocked the drain holes and led to water in the drivers footwell. Luckily spotted it before it did too much damage.
Actually after blasting the rotting leaves out I stupidly didn't clean the tiny specs off the paintwork and it was a days work to remove them all a week later. Live and learn.

Not far removed from the air filter on my Zed after purchase with a full BMW dealer service history. Had never had a replacement filter in all its life so never trust history on any car.

im with you mike, i think thr so called full service history is bullshit, , if you pay attention to bmw oil changes your engine will be stuffed by the time it gets to 100k
