Someones hit me car!

Post by samZ4M » Fri Jan 04, 2019 10:12 am

Someone hit my car in a supermarket car park, luckily the damage isn't too bad and I have the details of the person.

So, it's all going through, she's admitted liability (hard not to when I'm not even near the car!), and they have agreed to take care of paying direct. This means I don't need to deal with my own insurers (although I have told them about the accident already).

I'm at a cross roads, where they want to order a new wheel, it's only been scuffed, but BMW want to replace it. I have rep CSL's on the Z, and they've quoted for the original 224M wheel. I said it's different, to which he's asked me to produce a part number. Obviously I can't do that for the rep, but I can for the CSL (1 genuine CSL is worth a set of reps!)

On the other hand, I was thinking to ask them to check it and refurb it and the front wheel the same side (for colour match). Whilst it's all being done, I may as well pay for the other side of the car to be done too, so they all match.

Do you think this is fair? What would you do?

Also, virtual beer for the closest guess for the repair work for this...

Well I recon a decent local body shop could make a nice job of that for around £8-900 so for BMW I would guess £2800 :o

My stab in the dark would be £150 per wheel refurb = £300. Maybe £600 for the paint so £900 + vat = £1080 altogether.

Annoyingly you will find that even a mention of the accident to your insurance will affect your premium next year. I wrote many a furious letter to my mrs insurers about this as she had very similar situation last year. Highly unfair.

BMW don't "repair" panels so they will cost in for a brand new bumper skin on that which will drive the cost right up. A bumper skin is circa £600 alone before you even consider paint and labour or the additional brackets, bolts, clips etc. I reckon your looking at a £2k upwards repair cost from BMW for that little scuff.

It doesn't look too bad in your pic. I'd be looking at a smart repair for around 150 quid plus a single wheel refurb for about 80 quid.

I'm with you on the price. The actual price seems very extreme if it is only a bumper scuff and a scuffed wheel.

Does the other party know the estimated cost at this time?

It's all going through the other parties insurance, so they know!

She did ask if she could pay outside of insurance, I said it'll probably be £1-2K and she said "Oh, it's a BMW so pricey, I'll go through insurance"

What a nightmare :( at least the person had the decency to let you know what happened. I’m surprised at how ‘reasonable’ BMW’s estimate though.

On the plus side you’ll lose any stone chips / marks on the bumper

Honestly, I'm grateful they came forward. No one was hurt, accidents happen etc.

Annoyingly there are no marks on the rear bumper! It's all on the side skirts and front bumper. Although you've reminded me I could look at getting them to fit Aero side skirts whilst it's in 8)
