Tyre size choice

Post by garz » Fri Nov 09, 2018 12:44 am

Gonna fit new tyres to style 224s on standard si.

Was thinking
225 40 18 front ( stop possible rubbing, but have descent ride)

245 40 18 rear, ( stop possible rubbing also, but concerned of stretched look)?

Any thoughts

Worth reading this thread if you haven’t already done so:

viewtopic.php?f=49&t=107556

I’m also interested in tyre size recommendations for 224s on an Si Coupe. There is a comment in that thread that there could be rubbing at the front with the standard Si 225/40 front tyre size and a recommendation to go to 215/45/18. However I’m currently running 225/40 on wider 8.5 inch rims with lower offset (35 vs 42) and don’t see and rubbing issues with that setup so I would have thought the standard (si) tyre size will be fine.

The rear is where I have more of a question mark. Given that the 224 rear wheel is already half an inch wider than a standard si 18” wheel I’m reluctant to go to a narrower tyre than 255 because I don’t like the stretched look and I would prefer the tyre to provide some rim protection for the wheel.

Had a 3series tourer which I ran 245 40s on 9j 224 rears with no stretch ( Goodyear)
Guess it depends on tyre brand. Avoid the "narrower" fit makes like Falken & Hankook.
Goodyear, Continental, Michelin & Vredestein would be fine

Good to see my thread being used :)
With sizes you’ve got to also realise there is lots that could affect rubbing. If the shocks are tired, lower springs, fitment of spacers, etc. If you’re going over a bump then speed also.

I guess the only way to know for sure is to try it, but could be expensive to rectify if you do get rub?

well, decided after days of deliberation to go....

Front 225/40/18 { standard M size is 225/45/18} £121 for two

Rear 245/40/18 { standard M size is 255/40/18} £135 for two,

a considerable saving.

Tyres are Debica Presto UHP 2,s {By Goodyear} Fuel economy band C, Wet weather band A and roadnoise band 68db.

Now i know the purists out there will say not a full branded tyre, but this tyre out performs most of the branded tyres out there. {if you go by the tyre label} which i know is subjective. but good enough for me.

Also not such a big hit on the pocket IF i have my calculations on tyre choice wrong :?

My thoughts are these sizes ive chosen, should avoid the possibility of tyre rub given the available information on fitting z4M wheels to a non M car, and also give a decent ride quality and hopefully fill the arches nicely..

Time will tell

Tyres and refurbed wheels fitted.
Happy with the sizes i went with in the end.
Car needs to settle as it hasnt moved since i dropped it of jack, but rear looks sweet, and the front i may fit a spacer just to bring it out into arch a little.

Drives great, just what i was hoping for vijay.
Fills arches nicely with a quiet ride. And a good level of comfort.

I expect they'll be fine if you dont push it- but, remember they're cheap for a reason!
