ZHP Gear Knob - Finally Received & Fitted

Post by JamieZ4C » Sat Sep 22, 2018 7:57 am

After placing my order for a new ZHP gear knob with Sopers at the beginning of June it finally arrived this week. Only three and a half months :o

So was the wait worth it? Yes. Yes it was :D

Fitting one of these simply couldn't be easier. Pull off the old and push on the new. The groove in the selector rod and knob means you can't go wrong in terms of alignment.

And I can confirm there's quite a difference in weight and height too. The old knob weighed in at 84 grams, with the ZHP weighing in at 180 grams. Well over twice the weight!

I think it looks a lot better too. Especially with my black interior.

It's a lovely knob to hold too, feels great in the hand (stop sniggering at the back!). And it makes a noticeable difference to the gear selection and changes too. If I'm honest there was a hint of disappointment at first, the reviews of others giving me false expectations that any notchyness would be eliminated. But I got over that very quickly.

The end result is that the gears select much easier, and changing gears while having a blast is a much more pleasurable experience now. The extra weight and shorter throw are very noticeable and a big improvement. It's a shame BMW didn't fit this knob as standard because I love it!

A great review and to summarise you seem to be saying that it’s not size that matters but the extra weight that delivers more thrust and an overall more pleasurable experience :D

Thanks papa, do you know would this be suitable for a 2.0s e85?

I can't see why it wouldn't fit your E85 - my E46 and E91 both had the same size and fitting.

Definitely an improvement over standard - my E86 has one!
Coupes because stunning!

I'm sure it would fit. Give Sopers a try and mention you're a Z4 forum member. That's what I did and got good discount. Free delivery too. Think I paid less than £60 from memory
