Brakedown cover

Post by andyf1140 » Fri Aug 10, 2018 1:07 am

My wife needed help tonight and being with the RAC she gave them a call. It took 20 minutes for them to answer the phone and wh3n she got through they said it would be 4 to 5 hours before someone could get out to her. Apparently it's too hot! :headbang:

I think I'm going to switch providers. Has anyone had experience of Green Flag?

Just told this to my wife (we're also members of RAC) she was under the impression the priority was women on there own. Obviously not

Mine is through Nationwide with the account I have, used it once 3 years ago, I was home with the car under 2 hours. They use who ever is local to where you break down.

My wife called the RAC out to our old Galaxy in June this year. Late morning and they arrived within ten minutes. Only the second time we've called them since 1986!

Depends where you are and how many other people have called - if its like windscreen firms they will all get worse. Prices being driven down because either the breakdown firms are chasing business and taking contracts from banks/insurance companies who in turn give the service as a free-be to thousands of customers - who don't worry about routine maintenance because they have 'free' breakdown cover. Or because they have started offering discounts to new customers.

Add to that the (electronic complexity) of modern cars and drivers who call as soon as an amber EML comes on; and the holidays where more people drive unreliable cars further and the prospects are grim

When I started driving most people I knew could fix most simple breakdowns themselves - at first I couldn't afford to join the RAC. Now we cuts costs down to the lowest common denominator - its the new British mentality more for less. What was that about paying peanuts....?

I’ve had to call the RAC twice this week, once via Nissan breakdown cover. Both times I was advised it could be up to 4 hours but they arrived in 30 mins. When we were with the AA my wife was left in the middle of nowhere for over 4 hours so I think they can all be pretty useless

I've been with AutoAid for the past 5 years or so, they subcontract out to local recovery companies but on the couple of times I've had to call them out the recovery has usually arrived in half an hour or so (even at 8am on a weekday morning) and got my car going there and then - once was a battery replacement, another time was a coil pack - luckily he had the right one in his van!

I'm with the RAC earlier this year my old X5 lunched its rear diff, it took about 10 mins to get through to them. Once i did the Initial patrol was there in around 40 mins and confirmed what i already knew, it then took another 2 hours for the truck to come and recover the car to the local stealers.

To be honest the rare times we have had to use the RAC I have always been satisfied with the service i think in times of weather extremes you have to be prepared to wait.

We are with GEM https://www.motoringassist.com/, been with them for over 10 years now. They send out a breakdown guy and they either repar or take you to a garage or home. You pay the person for the service, then claim back in full. We have never had an issue and they cover all my family in any car for £118 a year. You also get a really good mag every 3 months.

The Volvo & Merc have lifetime free EU assist, recovery & courtesy car provided they’re main dealer serviced.

The Volvo’s 9 years old & took them 30 minutes to arrive when the alarm wouldn’t lock the car (I blew a fuse that I couldn’t find)

Yes the Dealer’s service is a bit more, but free EU cover... happy days

^ had a similar experience when I had a Ford, the servicing included a year of breakdown cover so it being £45 more than the local indys was countered by not having to pay for breakdown cover.

With Nationwide now as the account benefits work out nice and cheap, breakdown cover for me and the other half, plus phone cover and travel insurance for £13 a month is fair value. Cover is valid in Europe too.

We are with Britannia Rescue. Happily never waited more than an hour for a call out. :D I guess they all have their busy periods.

We’re with AA too. My card says I’ve been with them since before I was born!! Figure that one out

No trouble, always out quickly and tend to sort it out by the side of the road (whatever the issue is). Would definitely recommend!
