Rear brake disc opinions please

Post by DMC63 » Tue Jul 17, 2018 9:11 pm

Car is in BMW and they've recommended putting new discs on the rear.

Heres the 'Health check' video they sent. The car wasn't jump started as the mechanic says, it was bump started.

My question is, Do you think the rear discs need changing? I'll be doing this myself if they do

I would say so; mine were in similar shape when I bought my car a few months ago. New discs, pads and handbrake shoes; easy enough job however the hex bolt was rusted and we had to drill the head off to the shoulder then put some elbow into getting the disc off the hub. Easy job after that.

ETA worth to start budgeting for some new rear tyres too

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and do them along with the handbrake shoes.
I'm thinking of moving over to non-runflats. A rear runflat tyre cost me £275 about 18 months ago.
I'll start another thread for the tyres..

Citing corrosion on the inner and outer edges of the discs as a reason to replace them?? Scaremongering much? Discs have a minimum thickness. If you want to charge over £100 per hour, Mr Dealership, how about you report the disc thicknesses

I replaced my rear discs and pads a couple of weeks back. £55 for all Mintex items. I've just bought Mintex discs and pads for the front end too - £55 again. Rude not to at those prices :)

Good point on reporting disc thicknesses..
I've always replaced parts on the car with OEM, probably down to OCD, lol. For both rear discs, pads, shoes and sensor £165 from BMW. Will get this ordered and the job done next week sometime. Rear tyre first...£OUCH£

Should be tyres. Good practice to replace in sets, particularly so if you drive more spiritedly.

Regarding discs, as mentioned they have minimum thicknesses. You've got plenty of pad left. Run to minimum disc thickness and then replace. Just like tyres, you wouldn't replace at 3/4mm when limit is 1.6mm

I'm going to buy the kit while I have the cash and change it all when the pads have worn down.

Minimum thickness is stamped into the disc. It should be on the external face of the handbrake bell.
