I don't understand 're-proofing'? The roof from new is breathable on top with a waterproof membrane beneath.

What are the advantages to making the top layer non-breathable?

I can't argue either way, the way I see it is that there's no harm in using it but also no harm in not using it. If people like the water to 'bead' off the roof then proofing achieves that effect. I guess it would also help inhibit mould growth?

I think you'll find that a treated roof is still breathable it's just a water repellent that stops the water soaking cloth...
