changing exterior bulbs ( fog lights and rear side marker )

Post by wiseguy » Sun Jun 17, 2018 11:46 pm

So several searches on z4forum and Google didn't give me a clear answer.

Where can I find instructions on changing the rear bumper side marker bulbs?

What about changing the bulbs in the front fog lights? I bought some xenon bulbs for the fogs and would like to get those sorted to match the factory xenon headlights.

Edit: it appears the front wheels have to be removed in order to access the fog lights: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=36389

Thanks!

Fog lights I'm unsure of because I have a pre-facelift.

Do you just mean the rear lights? You can open a cover from the boot and then just twist out the bulb that needs replacing?

No, maybe this is a US feature only. The rear side marker at the rear of the car. Not part of the brake light. It’s literally on the bumper, not above it. See the attached photo.

Probably is a US feature - UK models definitely didn't have them.

Hopefully someone your side of the Pond may be able to offer some advice!

Assuming its acpost face-lift. Front fogs is a case of removing the front wheel to access the opening inside the wheel arch liner. It's the lower of the two. Using a large flat blade screw driver you can turn the two half-turn fastenings 180 degrees. The panel door will swing open. Fog bulbs are H11 and will twist out.

I also have a US spec Z4 with the rear bumper quarter panel lights. I had to get to them because EU regulations will not allow it. I simply removed some screws from the under body plastic cover, just behind the rear wheel. I was able to pull the plastic cover down enough to get my hands/arm in there, and twisted the bulb off with ease.

I also replaced the front corner marker lights from orange to white for the same reason above. It took me much longer to figure it out, basically you turn the wheel apposite direction of side you are working on. Remove the plastic access cover and using your hands trace the wire going up towards the direction of the bulb. You will feel a plastic tab at the end, turn the tab CC and remove the bulb. Don't look for the tab because it's hidden from view. Haven't done the fogs yet, so can't comment on that.

Hope this helps someone in the future, as this post is bit old and I'm sure wiseguy has it figured out

Fogs can be done without removing the wheels. Turn the wheel fully "in" and then use a screw driver to loosen the clips.

The lamps need a good shove to turn them, but then drop out quite easily. I've fitted white LED and they look pretty good, certainly matching the ice white headlamps.
