Keeping roof clean

Post by samZ4M » Thu May 24, 2018 3:06 pm

I've done my convertible roof at the end of summer last year, but it's pretty green again (around the edge to the body work). Water flows off it well, so it's treated well, but it just goes green quickly (maybe a few months). I use the autoglym cleaner with the agressive sponge.

Am I missing something, is there a knack to it, or is this normal?

I think whatever you clean it with, it will always come back ,especially if car lives outside.
I just accept it, clean it regularly between treatments and hoover it off.
its a small price to pay for top down motoring that the tin tops can only dream about. :poke:

I use a brush designed for the job. It’s blue and yellow if end up looking for one. A sponge won’t dislodge the deep algae and grime so it will just keep growing.

I used to use AG but have found better results using raggtopp. I treat it every six months and just wash it with cold water and a brush every wash in between. If I garaged my car I’d probably hoover in between treatments.

Have you use a diluted solution Milton Fluid? Been a damp 'green' winter and even now I'm going to clean mine again to try and clear the last few patches.

I use the Autoglym kit along with a Vikan brush. It's like a big nail brush.

Works for a while then clean it off again. One of the hidden features of owning a convertible!

Others on here use the Milton stuff for the algae. There's a thread on it somewhere.

the cover sounds good in theory, but if the roof is wet and you cover it, you trap all the moisture inside and will make it worse.

Seems it's fairly normal then. I'll give it a scrub and look into the miltons thing. thanks all

I used the genuine BMW stuff - seemed to work well, but when I bought my Zed recently it had been garaged most of its life, so I don't know if the roof was black because it had been cleaned for sale or because it has never been kept outside...

These products are cheaper when bought on amazon and come direct from Park Lane BMW...
Cleaner - https://www.amazon.co.uk/BMW-Genuine-Co ... 1WWMMRR9VV
Water repellant impregnating agent - https://www.amazon.co.uk/BMW-Genuine-Wa ... M86JY0EDG4

Before cleaning and treating the rain would just soak into the roof... Now it mostly runs off...

I was having an issue with streaks after pressure washing and was looking for a method of cleaning the roof so that it looks black without dirt streaks :)
