E86 Z4 Specifications

Post by BeeEmm » Fri Apr 20, 2018 9:20 am

I am sure that this information will be available on the site somewhere, but maybe not all together as here. This is what I believe to be correct, is it?

My car is a 2008 3.0si with 18" 108 wheels as below.

BMW Z4 Engine Oil = BMW LL04 5W-30
Torque wrench setting for wheel bolts = 120 Nm

Tyre Pressures = Front 2.3 Rear 2.6

Wheels
Front Tyre = 225/40 W18 Front Wheels = 8Jx18 ET 47
Rear Tyre = 255/35 W18 Rear Wheels = 8.5Jx18 ET 50

Bolt Pattern 5X120
Thread size (THD) M12X1.5
Centre bore (CB) 72.6

Any advice, welcome.

Engine oil is a big debate! So long as it's LL04 certified (or LL01 technically for the M54 engine) then it's fine, people tend to use thicker grades at higher mileages as it helps reduce oil burning.

Gearbox oil is 75w80 GL4, do not use GL5 as it can damage yellow metals. However, just to confuse it some companies like Miller's make GL4/5 oils that are safe to use, while still meeting GL5 standards.

Diff oil depends on the car, open diffs (ie everything except the M) uses 75w90 GL5, M uses 75w140.

Filters, personally I recommend going onto carparts4less, whacking registration in and picking the Mann filters.

Brake fluid, factory is DOT4 which can be replaced with 5.1. Now, while 5.1 has a higher minimum spec, most performance fluids are classed as DOT4, so don't assume 5.1 is better. For the cost I'd recommend ATE TYP200 fluid, high wet boiling point and reasonably cheap, much cheaper than other performance fluids such as RBF600 or Castrol React

Coolant, G48 glycol based. Some people will tell you it has to be BMW branded, the fact is BMW don't make coolant. Anything that meets the same spec is fine, including Eurocarparts blue stuff, £19 for 5 litres and the same standard specs as BMW stuff. If you want a brand, Comma G48 is around £25. And unless you live in a very hard water area, tap water is fine to use. Distilled is not needed.

Cue the debates about half my points above... :fuelfire:

Well non-M E86s all have the 3.0Si as they are all post-facelift.

According to my BMW brochure the SE models came as standard with "square" Star-spoke style 200 wheels in 8J X 17 size and with 225/45 X 17 tyres.

Sport models came as standard with style 787 (whatever they may be) and presumably "staggered" 8J front and 8.5J rear as the tyres are 225/40 X 18 F and 255/35 X 18 R. But my first Sport Coupe had MV2s (aka Style 135) and my current one has Style 108s, but both "staggered" in the same sizes as the mystery Style 787!

But whichever of these options you have my little sticker says 2.2 Bar Front and 2.7 Bar Rear.

Not too clued up on lubricants (I let my BMW Indy sort that) but I'm currently using up some Castrol Edge Titanium 5W/40 for engine oil top-ups as it meets BMW LL04. I'll get Shell next time as that is what my Indy uses now.

He also told me any blue anti-freeze would be fine for topping up! :)
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black
