De-Limit Top Speed on Z4C

Post by R60BBA » Thu Apr 19, 2018 12:04 am

Okay so as previously posted I will be going on a roadtrip to Germany next month and I am quite interested in seeing what kind of speeds these things can get up to.

Ofc the car is limited to 155mph but I’ve heard that the N52B30 engine can get up to 170mph in a Z4.

Which brings me onto my questions:

Can you de-limit the car and keep stock map settings? If so, what is the cost?

I’ll be on the Autobahn for a period of time and so would like to test this out as I’ve already done 155 :? *cough* that was a lie #M40

De-Limit Top Speed on Z4C

The Z4M will do 170+ in 5th no speed limiter on 5th as far as I can tell. It runs into the rev limiter at about 172. No idea what the 3.0 will do, I would hazard a guess at around 160. But I don't know the gearing. :)

Hi, it should be possible as I’ve had the 155mph limiter removed from my 2litre. I’ve never got to the local chip shop so fast! :)

De-Limit Top Speed on Z4C

I am not sure that it will go much past the 155 to be honest so pretty pointless paying a lot of cash in removing the limiter IMO

Its not like 155 MPH is exactly slow :P

Also I wouldn't be overly keen to keep the car at 155 for a prolonged period of time.

To add to the above, if you wanted to get it done still you could try and contact some people who code BMW's as it may well be an option on the software. (it was on my M3 anyway)

Good luck

like Buzyg I was under the impression speed limiter was only effective on 6th gear, this was also the case on my old e46 M3... potentially that's an S54 thing though!?

What gear were you in when not doing 155 on the M40?

Porsche never limit their cars AFAIK and the closest in terms of power is the 986 Boxster S with 258bhp. That tops out at 164mph so I would expect something very similar from a 3.0Si.

De-Limit Top Speed on Z4C

My N52 engined 330i manual would easily hit is speed limited at an indicated 163mph, real 154mph. Quite impressive for a cooking 3 series. :)

I could believe it would do a real 160mph, possibly a couple mph more, but it's going to need more power to hit a real 170mph.

Did you ever take her to VMax?
Mine starts to go light at the front above 160.
I'guessing yours could get very interesting at 185 or so. :D

It is a Coo Pee though so maybe 168mph and that'll be it due to the extra weight with the tin lid, mahoosive hatchback and the rear window!

Might be worth getting a Roadster in front of you as a pacemaker but then you'd have issues trying to keep up!

The 155 mph limiter only comes into effect in 6th.... you'll struggle to hit it.

My Si coupe really struggled at 150 (in 5th). doubt you will see 160 so probably not worth it tbh!

My M pulls to 172 and hits the rev limiter in 5th

In that case I wonder why Wiki quotes a 3.0Si E85 as being 1,400 kg, and a 3.0Si E86 as being 1,395 kg? Must be all the metal welded in to make the Roadster less floppy! :P

It sounds like maybe the 3.0Si is too low-geared in 5th and too high-geared in 6th for optimum top end!

Seeing as BMW were going to fit a limiter I can see why they might have done that.
