But I was looking at some Focal and Rainbow speakers and they were suitable for any car except E85/86. Do you know why?
Hello! If you ever find some set that might fit the blank door panels please quote me as I'm looking for the same solution. I'd like to replace the current speakers for a Focal set, but I'm a little bit lost on what speakers should I choose, as there are many many sets. I found a kit "Focal 165 AS3" but I do not know if it's decent, if I have to install an amp or what...

Focal 165 AS3 is what I have in my E85, they're great speakers.

Not sure if there were any installation issues as I got a professional to fit them for me.

I would recommend an amp to go with them, I had the Pioneer GM-D1004 fitted at the same time, though they did say they had to take the dashboard apart to get it in....

Hi Tinman, your speakers were placed in the kick panels (being 16.5cm speakers), yes? Did you already have door speakers fitted?
I'm looking for 10cm door speakers, but may change the kick panel speakers at a later date.
I've done some digging around today, and basically the upshot was that any mid-priced speaker (~£30-50) will be more than adequate when matched to the OEM amp.
Examples of speakers suggested to me were:
  • JL Audio C1-400X
    In-Phase XTC10.2
    Pioneer TS-E1002i
    Focal ISC100
    Focal 100AC
An interesting 3 hole model is the Eton PRX110.2 (but again, somehow not recommended for the E85/6)
I am enquiring about adapters as well.

Hi Z4C_er

The focal as3 are 3 way component speakers so that comprised of 16.5cm kick panel speakers, 8cm door speakers and 2.5cm tweeters
If the standard size for the door panel is 10cm then I would assume they fitted an adapter to step down from 10cm to 8cm

There weren't any door speakers fitted previously

Actually that set seems the perfect solution. Thanks!
The 8cm mid range could be mounted to the existing blanking plate. Just cut a hole or even additionally reinforce it.

No problem :) Just be aware you'd need to find a home for the crossover units, I believe mine were fitted either in, or near to the kick panels

....then you just need to fit a pair of Reckhorn D-165 long throw subs into the space behind the seats where you have cubby holes. And an amp to drive them but an amp in the boot is dead easy. Amazon link... https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00MNA ... ref=plSrch

Big improvement over stock speakers, the audio was terrible with the standard kit when I bought the car, now crystal clear :)

Having previously had a 700W sub in the boot of my last car it's lacking in bass significantly in comparison which is to be expected, I'd like to add a sub but not putting an amp anywhere near my boot at the moment cos it's sopping wet right through ! I would imagine it would be awesome with one though as the mids and highs are perfect

Going to have to buy a pair of those I recon, liking the sound of 28Hz....
I already have a 4 channel amp fitted which I can run them off, ideally it could do with being a bit higher output but should make a noticeable difference as my front speakers only go down to 55Hz

Thanks. Re the crossovers, there's no reason that they couldn't go in the dry side of the doors, is there?

It will never go down to that in such a small enclosure if course. Expect a -3db point of about 50hz or so.
