Only had the car since Sunday and this warning light has now come on! According to the Owners manual this is for Canadian purposes only?????

Also the oil light came on and according to the manual should be replaced with API SH or higher, just to get the wife to work I used what I had which was API SL CF - I haven't driven it but when started it smoked like a good Un!

Have I fecked up??????

Gutted :-(

The oils shouldn't have caused an issue over a short period, not checked what the different specs are but presuming you haven't overfilled it?

The light is the std engine management light we all have on our Zeds, and as such isn't market specific.

A code read is your next step, to see what the system thinks is causing a problem.

I put about a pint in - if that. Thanks!

So why has the light suddenly come on?

Code read as in someone with a laptop and the software? Sorry I'm new to all this. :-(

Hi, did you buy privately or from a dealer? If it’s from a dealer you can return the car for them to look at/fix.

Did you use the dipstick? (if you have one)

Also, you can buy a £5 dongle from Ebay that will read the engine fault codes using the torque app on your phone - Assuming the codes are engine/emissions related, if not you need something like Carly, the BMW kit from BCables, or a "proper" diagnostic tool..

Would help if you posted your location, as a lot of members have the first two items and would be willing to help..

You can get a cheap Chinese reader from the likes of Amazon for less than the labour at a shop, comes in very handy and do most of the BMW range. I use a C110 but there are others.

Don't have a dipstick! But thanks for the suggestion.

I'm based in Norwich. Thanks for your input.

Is the car safe to drive less than a 1/4 of a mile and back for the wifes work?

How is it running? If it seems normal without any nasty sounds I would think that’s ok until you get it diagnosed.

So sorry mate - not a good start to join the zed world - hopefully you can resolve the issue soon. You could try contacting the seller to see if the light has come on before and if it did how was it fixed - legally you have no redress when buying privately but not everyone is out to pull a fast one when selling a car - if it were me I would get back to him - you never know he might help .

Good luck and a belated welcome :)

I think the first question is what model Z do you have exactly? You also seem to be talking about oil service categories but not about viscosity e.g. 5W-30??

If you suddenly got tons of smoke on startup you could well have overfilled it (although adding a half a litre shouldn't have done that)....but are you sure it was the oil light? Which one was it from the pic below? Alternatively, did you spill a little oil onto the exhaust manifold perhaps?

The only way to tell what the engine management light means is by connecting it to diagnostics I'm afraid.

It started this morning with the oil light directly to the left of the right indicator arrow.

A 2 second beep then something flashed up on the screen along the lines of 0......................10 0.1L

Thats now gone only to be replaced by the Engine Managment light with now bleep????????? Thanks for all your replies so far!

You still haven't told us model, but I wonder if it's a fault with the electronic oil sensor....
