Replacing rear quarter panel

Post by greg81 » Tue Mar 13, 2018 3:01 pm

So I have a hellish dent in my rear quarter (oo-er!) And I'd like to get it sorted.

I looked into a repair quote but was also going to check the breakers, however I've been told by a garage that this panel is not replaceable as it's structurally welded onto the car.

Is there any truth in this?

It's bolted in , although one bolt at the top is a pig to get to, iirc you need to loosen the roof frame, there is a thread on here

Nice one cheers. I've been quoted just under £700 to repair and spray. I think I'll just get a panel from a breakers and do it myself!

I picked a panel up from classic car spares on eBay already in the correct colour. This was a couple of years ago on my old Z, but I think it was <£100 for the part, and bmw fitted it for ~£150

£700 is way way too much for that repair.

I’d be looking at PDR first, and if not replace with a used panel in the same colour to keep as original as possible.

Get some PDR quotes and keep half an eye on eBay for panels in the same colour. It’s on a swage line so, if you go the PDR route, make sure you get someone who’s done a few!

£700? Jesus that's extortionate.

A good dent man would probably be able to sort that, and retain the original paint for £100..

The sad thing it was a friend's father. Tells me that price then tells me the panel is welded and I can't replace it. A shame really.

I'll get onto the breakers. I have the facilities and tools do diy a replacement at least. Gives me something to do :)

To be honest most car rear wings are welded on so I can understand him getting that wrong, it's the £700 that rediculous. Unless of course he was quoting to actually replace the wing with another welded on wing and paint. But that would be well over the top for that damage.

For the cost and hassle of sourcing a second-hand part id just let a decent dent man have a bash at it.

If the paint isn't damaged, have a dent guy repair it.
