Retro-fit of PDC

Post by eddiemunster » Thu Feb 22, 2018 10:11 am

Hi

Is this an easy enough job to do, if I manage to source a bumper with the PDC holes/sensors on them?

Regards

It's a bit involved as you also have to fit the wiring loom to the sensors, the control module and do some wiring in the car I believe. On top of all that I think the module then needs coding.
All in all if it was me unless I could source everything as a job lot from a breakers etc (and then of course you still need to code it). I would be thinking of the aftermarket route for both cost and ease. At the end of the day the oem system is a basic audio only system so there's no real advantage to it over the aftermarket as long as you use one of the better more discreet kits.

Hi

I did think that might be the better option, the aftermarket units only need pairing to the reverse lights so that'd be a far easier job to do.

I asked as I was going to modify my bumper, for a quad exit, so I was going to get a bumper with PDC's on them, but then fit an aftermarket system having utilised the pre-drilled holes/sensors.

Regards

You could do. The only issue would be making sure the aftermarket sensors are the right size for the OEM holes. If your looking to mod a bumper anyway then it might be worth just having a go at drilling the holes for the sensors in your existing bumper. Would save you a bit of cash.

I do often think that they're needed more on the front than the back. The long nose and low slung seating position do you no favours when it comes to parking

That's all well and good, unless, like me, every parking manoeuvre is performed in the style of Bodie and/or Doyle.......

I used a company called avrmobiles. They supplied and fitted front and rear sensors, including interior switch for the fronts and some colour coding of the sensors for about £250. Done on my drive, nice guy and good job. Worth giving them a call I think.

OP what year is your car? My 53 plate had the main loom installed from the factory. If yours is a similar age then have a look behind the boot carpet on the right side for a spare connector.

If there then you'll need the control module that goes there, the bumper/sensor loom, the four sensors, the speaker/gong under the dash and the bumper. An OEM retrofit is always nicer than aftermarket if not to troublesome. So check if your car has the main wiring installed first...

If you go aftermarket the cobra/vodafone(phone company) are recongised as the best, they are flush fit, can be colour coded and excellent quality. You can buy for about £100, colour coded and fit yourself or have them pro fitted for approx £140. Vodafone also do a front system as well.

For the front of your Z4? Interesting!
How many sensors do you have on the front? Where did they mount them, and any chance of a piccy or two?
And finally, was it worth it?
