Inspection 1: Where to go?

Post by barnyg » Mon Feb 19, 2018 1:50 pm

So looking at my dash I'm at around 10k until inspection 1 is suggested. However I am also approaching my MOT and I would usually get my car serviced with the MOT every year. Am I correct in assuming the best course of action is to just go with an inspection 1 for continuity?

Assuming this is right, does anyone have suggested of good Indies in the Woking/Guildford area? I have a good indy I would usually go to run by a friend, but they aren't BMW approved and want to keep the logbook looking healthy...as always I've checked the local BMW dealer for comparison (I know it's going to be much higher than an indie) and they're after £269 for the inspection 1 alone. It seems alot considering apparently it just includes an oil change and microfilter change...am I correct in that the spark plug changes are done during inspection 2? Lady on the phone also said they don't often do just oil services now which confused me a bit.

Any help much appreciated.

Barny :)

If you want to keep it correct, get an oil service done with your mot and then get the inspection 1 done when either your mileage countdown reaches zero or the 2 years is up.

Go somewhere else.

Depending on your mileage you may want to start considering DIY or any other garage. Look at the service schedule, there's not much on there that isn't covered by the MOT. IMHO the intervals are too long, if you want to keep long term then have a google of lifetime BMW maintenance schedule, I subscribe to that school of thought.

I suppose technically you only need to get an inspection done every 4 years, alternating between inspection 1 and 2. I can’t see what harm just having an oil change in the interim years would do. I don’t know how many miles you are doing but 30 to 40 k miles between inspections are normal. My coupe has always got to its service time before the two years service interval and it’s on 125k miles on an 09 plate. It’s had 3 oil services at approx 20k 60k 100k and inspection 1 at 40k, inspection 2 at 80k and the last inspection 1 at about 117k. So that’s 6 oil changes in all and all work done was on time and in mileage schedule. Car gets regular use and burns a litre of oil about every 12k miles. If it sat around more I’d probably ge the oil done every year , but I just keep to the BMW schedule and everything seems healthy.

It may be too far for you - 15 miles south of Guildford - but I recommend these guys and I know that a few folk on here use them too:

They do courtesy cars.

For the last 3 years or so I've always used TWG Automotive in Camberley (01276 22733) for both my BMWs. The principal, Will, and at least 1 of his technicians are ex-Sytner. There is also a courtesy car for £15 a day IIRC, but if you want it you may have to book further ahead.

A couple of other form members go there too! :)

I can’t help with a reccomendation but I would do an oil change yourself, making a note of it in the service record referencing the receipt for the oil. That way you still get fresh oil in there and don’t line someone else’s pocket when you don’t have to.

In my opinion a couple of extra oil changes done by the owner shows that it’s owned by an enthusiast.

Inspection 1: Where to go?

Post by barnyg » Tue Feb 20, 2018 3:05 pm

Thanks for all the replies, have decided to get quotes from both TWG Camberley and BMS Leatherhead. The former sounds like it could be tough as apparently they're booking into April already!

As suggested, planning to go with an interim oil service plus MOT and brake fluid. Oh and a general health check to make sure everything else is ok. Tom, you make a good point but as I'm doing other bits anyway will go for the oil change at the same time for ease. Inspection 1 next on dash but 10,000 miles away, just wasnt sure about the whole alternating oil services and inspections thing considering it last had oil service.

For heavens sake dont ask for a general health check along with oil service and MOT. The MOT should cover everything and more that a general health check will achieve. The garage will simply add extra to your bill and not do anything. MOT and oil service should not amount to more than £120 as I suspect they will suck the oil out and not even remove the sump plug. Oh forgot the disposable glove so that will add another £100 please.
