Spare connectors under steering column

Post by DanYelSun » Thu Feb 15, 2018 12:23 pm

Hi guys,

Hope you can help?

Had the lower steering column trim off to adjust the play in the steering and found these spare connectors coming from the same part of the loom as the footwell light, any ideas what they are for?

Many thanks!

Has the buzzer that is located in that trim for lights on or keys in the ignition been removed or unplug? Many find it annoying and either unplug it or completely remove it

As above, they are from the beeper/buzzer that give lights on warning, reverse parking beeps and a few others, some owners remove one of the plugs to stop the annoying continuous beep when you put it in reverse, whilst allowing the parking sensors to still function.

It looks like this, and is fitted into the plastic tray above the pedals;

I'm sure only one connection is for the Reverse Gear selection "gong". Not sure what the other two are for?

From memory, removing the single white connector disadles the "gong"

Should the car make a noise whilst in reverse? I've got rear parking sensors, and there's only a beeping noise when near something, but apart from that everything is quiet when in reverse. It's an automatic, if that makes any difference.

Mine is auto too. By default, when you put it into reverse, there is an (annoying) continuous sound, which IMO detracts from the parking sensor sound, so people turn it off by disconnecting the lead. It you drop the trim panel (3 x philips No2 screws) you'll probably notice the pulled out plug if yours isn't doing this.

I think if you've got a continuous beep it's identifying an issue with your PDC system.

Mine does not do a continuous beep but starts beeping when near objects. My "gong" device is all plugged in a functioning. I.e when the lights are left on etc.

I remember in the E46 a continuous beep when reverse is engaged is to signal a problem with your parking sensors. Presumably it's the same for the zed.

No, not at all. The continuous sound will be interrupted by beeping as you get near to things. I think it's to remind our "American" friends that they are actually in reverse :D

Third post down mentions the constant beep issue with the 3 series.

I assume we are only talking about cars with reversing sensors here? Never heard any sort of electronic sound , when I put mine into reverse. :)

Yes, although we have gone slightly off topic from the OP.
